Denied
Well it is official....My insurance denied me because they said if I could lose 30lbs in three months, I can do it on my own....I just hate that I did what they asked and did a medically supervised weight and exercise program and got denied. I am so upset, it sucks that you do what your told and you get screwed in the end. I know I can appeal this but sometimes you just wonder how much denial can my body take before I just give up. I don't want to lose any more weight because if I get below a BMI of 40, that gives them another reason to deny me. If I would have done nothing, they would have denied me because I wasn't successful at losing weight.
When I was in NY going through this, in order to be a candidate you had to lose 5% of your weight, which at that time was about 15 lbs but I lost 20 in two months but couldn't get the surgery then because we were getting ready to move down to NC and didn't want to take the change of throwing a blood clot.
I just don't know what to do. I just want to say the hell with it. I guess I am going to be fat forever but that would be the easy way out but it is a horrible feeling to be told know after you worked so hard to get to where you are....

With my insurance I had to go thru a 6month weight management program. I needed to follow their diet and exercise. My dr told me that the insurance went by the weight that I was when I started the program. I have united health care. Check with your insurance and it should be what you weigh (and your medical history) when you start the doctor/insurance requirements. Did your dr turn in the weight from when you started? It's worth a phone call.
Don't give up. I know you've been through a lot of frustrating things with insurance, but don't give up.
Appeal. 30 pounds in three months is great but of course it does not mean you can lose all the weight you need to lose and keep it off. Your surgeon's office should be able to advise you about how best to go about it, but appeal. You've worked too hard to give up now.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Both of the times I had WLS the program told those that had to do 6 months diets to lose a few lbs but not to lose a lot because this could happen to them. I am sorry they did not warn you of this. File an appeal but I am with Kelly talked to your doctor's office first and see what they have to say, they may even file it for you.

Keep going, stay on it. I got denied my first time, and then they made me go 2 years......TWO YEARS! But I did what they said, and I really give the WL a good go on my own, always down to around 200 then back up sometimes as high as near 260, then back down again, YoYo.
I just kept asking and pushing and my co morbidity's kept getting worse and finally they gave in. It sucks, but it is worth it in the end. My mom doesn't want to fight the insurance battle so she is thinking of self pay.....that is her option, but many people can not go that way. I know I couldn't.
Keep fighting. You will win some day, believe that. Your body will achieve what your mind believes.

Don't give up! It's ridiculous that you are being penalized for doing what they asked you to do.
The more I hear things like this, the more grateful I am that I got Kaiser insurance a couple of years ago. Once you are recommended, you stay that way. I was worried in the Options class when we were discussing having to lose some weight before surgery. I asked them about our BMI going lower due to this and whether it would affect our approval--the doctor that day said "No, because you are already approved." Whew!
