food journaling

I'm wondering especially about those that are a couple years out, or more.  How many of you are still journaling your food?  I have not done it regularly since I was about nine months out.  I track for a day or two once in a while to see about where I stand but that's it.  But I am thinking that doing it every day might help me stay on track.  I kinda don't want to do it and keep making excuses about why not, but I think it's because I know I am eating more carbs than is good for me and I don't wanna have to look at it written down.  Which of course means I need to do it even more.

But do you feel it helps you stay on track?  How does it benefit you to do it?

Kelly,

That is me too.  I am not doing the food tracking the way I should.  I know that I really need to make that a regular part of my life.  I think I sometimes rebel from things like that because I want to see myself as "normal".  I know I am not.  It is like a diabetic, not taking his blood sugar readings, because he just doesn't want to.

That is what I think.  I would be willing to take on a food logging buddy.  I would commit to logging and share what I have eaten that day.  I think it would help me to be more honest.

Let's do it.  Let's say for one week and then we can commit to doing it longer if we want to.  I don't know that it's something I need to do daily forever but I do need to do it daily right now.

I think for me it's mostly about being about to get away with stuff.  If I don't log it, I can pretend I didn't eat it, you know?  And I think it's always a problem if we can't be honest with ourselves about what we are eating.

I honestly don't think my eating is that bad.  I'm not eating cookies or candy or chips or stuff like that.  But it could be better and I need it to be a little better right now.

I should join you and Steve too.  I'm the same way.  I think it's why every diet I ever tried before is because I stopped tracking.  I absolutely hate doing it!  Did it religiously for the first about 9 months, then occasionally, now never.  And I really don't want to start again because I'd like to believe I can maintain without it, but I've been eating way too many carbs and I'm up about 5-10 pounds from where I want to be, so count me in too.  I can do it for one week, I hope.

Nine months is a long time to do it.  how can you make it more fun to do it?  Plan a reward at the end of the week or after a month of doing it daily?  Hmmm.... I should think of a reward for myself.

A reward is a good idea, but I'm really bad at rewarding myself, and I don't think it would motivate me to journal.  So now I need to figure out how to count the spoonfuls of eggnog ice cream.  LOL

But seriously, it's the one thing I've always had a pratically physical reaction to not doing.  As Steve says, it's like a rebellion and wanting to be normal.  I have the tools, lots of pre-entered food so it isn't hard.  I just feel it's like a punishment to do it.  That I should be able to control myself and stay within my food plan without writing things down.

But for one week, I should be able to manage.  Sort of afraid of what the numbers will tell me...

When do you want to start?

Oh, I'm starting today.  If I say I'll start tomorrow, then I'll use today to try to eat all the stuff I don't want to have to log or share.  If today is not good for you, though, you can start tomorrow.

I want to track what time I eat, what I eat, how many calories and how much protein, plus how much liquids and my vitamins.  But you can track yours however you want.  I don't think there is a magic way to do it that's better than other ways.  And I'm just doing mine on paper.

Anyone else want to join us in committing to track our food for one week?  Then at the end of the day we can post it.  You can post whatever you like, a list of everything you ate or just your totals for the day, and you can track it however it works best for you.  The important thing is to do it.

Oh good.  Well, whomever gets ready to post their totals at the end of the day (or in the morning), start a thread and then we can all post to it.
