I felt the same way after my surgery in May. The first few weeks to a month are the hardest. Your body is trying to adjust. HUGS! It will get better.

Keep an extra pillow at your side. When you feel a sneeze coming on hold the pillow tightly to your stomach. It helps with coughing too.

If I couldn't grab the pillow in time i'd hold my stomach with my hands, pressing firmly without causing additional pain. It helped.

Met my first goal, met my second goal, met my surgeons goal. Now I have a new goal!

I had surgery on Tuesday and experienced quite a bit of pain for several hours right after surgery. I think some of it was hunger pains as i was starved. The next day i had a great morning, but the car ride home bounced me around so in the evening i felt rotten. Yesterday i felt great and today i feel great. No problems sleeping {but the pain med gives me a headache} and i think i am doing great. I think it will get better each day.

Been there done that... smell, food aversion, gagging, went on a cruise a month after surgery, food sucked, etc.

That first couple weeks I kept asking myself why did I do this??

It does get better with time!   I'm very happy i did it, altho  my losing is very slow

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

I never had pain. Nurses and drs kept asking me about it but I couldn't complain.  I did have a pump line into my stomach that had paim med so I guess it was right on target.  For a week or two I had achiness but not unbearable.  Now that I'm through that I'm wondering what the surgery is like to remove the extra skin.  I've heard that it is more painful but I don't know.

Sounds like your going through exactly what i did! Jus take it one day at a time. Your first priority should be your liquids so just take little sips all day. I didn't take any vitamins for the first week and a half! And as far as the protein goes try putting some peanut butter in it depending on what flavor you have. That was the only way i could stomach my protein shakes in the first two weeks. Without it, they tasted like curtled milk! I am now a month out and can't believe the changes i have made, you will be just fine just focus on today :)

This kind of pain is possible with any surgery.  RNY will be my fifth surgery, my first three surgeries were for endometriosis, and my fourth was a gall bladder removal.   After my second surgery was turned into an open incision surgery due to scar tissue, I had so much pain!  I wasn't expecting it.  Now, I make sure to talk to my surgeons about proper pain management.  They usually give me Dulodid, and I am completely pain free after surgery.   (Yes, if you have enough surgery, it does become a little routine).

I find the pillow tactic to be the very best method to avoid pain.  However, if you remain in real pain beyond just the sneezes and coughs, you may want to give your surgeon a call.  They may be able to help you with a prescription.  There are also some very rare complications to any surgery  that could cause unmanageable pain.   That you are feeling a little better each day does not lead me to believe that you are having complications.

You'll get through this!

I typically don't reply to posts that have lots and lots of other responses simply because it has all been said!

However, your words were EXACTLY how I felt after surgery.  It took me a month until my side quit hurting.  I took at least two months until I could tolerate shakes and water and anything other than soup and yogurt.  It was two months before I even THOUGHT about going to the gym.  I still have problems with smells sometimes.  They made popcorn for everone at work today.  The smell made me gag all day and I ended up with a headache.

That being said, its over now.  I look back and go...god!  I was such a baby!  This is AWESOME!!

I hope you feel better soon!

Thank u soooo much everyone all ur responses every single one helps me to really think about it and try to stay positive. Best thing everyone said is it does get better and no one regrets it. I guess my body is just going into shock with the changes. Thank God im not hungry cause i would hate to fight that to. Its always better to get feedback from those who have been there. One day at a time. I can do it.

girl i hated my surgery the first month. sometimes i still hate the fact that i still dont sleep well, i cant eat good , my stomache feels like it has a mind of its own. i burp all the time. but getting dressed feels so good now. i dont have to scout in my closet for an hour for just a shirt and i feel good going out in public now . it does get better . as your weight comes off . u will smile. i can eat more now . i dont have stomache aches when i do . i still dont poop good. after awhile i think we just learn and become accustome to all the changes and they will feel more normal . hang in there. u will soon feel like a new woman .
