Lap Band vs Gastric bypass

Please see my post above.  (does the surgery fail the patient or does the patient fail the surgery) I tried to copy it but it is lost in cyberspace somewhere.  You are me 5 years ago.  I had such a limited RNY it was useless.  2 oz. pouch, 70 to 100cm bypass and he used a larger stoma hole punch on me.  I have and never had limitations or malabsorption.  I felt shame because others did so well and I actually was able to diet better before the RNY than after because since surgery I have no limitations.  After a while I pieced together the specifics of my surgery and did some reading and learned that my surgery was not appropriate for me.  The VSG saves the pyloric valve and you don't have the malabsorption that can cause problems in the future.  Please read the article by Dr. Roslin carefully.  At the end of the article he basically feels RNYs will be replaced in the future.  If I could go back 5 years I would definitely have the VSG.  If you do have the RNY make sure you ask for the specifics of your surgery. Most people don't ask but the heavier you are at surgery the more invasive a RNY they will do on you.  Consequently, you just like me may end up with a RNY that doesn't really help.  Good luck to you.  I wish you the best.  You do deserve a truly informed consent.  Tri

Thank you for that information :-) Actually the VSG would have been my first choice but Tricare doesnt cover it:-( (what i dont understand since they cover the lap band ) and i ant afford to pay out of pocket :-(  I will ss what my doctor can tell my about  how the bypass will help me and if its best for me. i heard a about Dr.Chung in Lake charles and everybody was more then happy with him and i also know someone who the bypass  surgery done by him 5 years ago so i feel i am in very goos hands :-)

and tricare will NOT cover it for probably another 4 years.  They told me they wanted to make sure they had 5 years of history behind it before they started allowing it.  I so wanted it but then i see some are starting to revise from not only lap bands (don't do it) but also now from VSG.  I did NOT have any intentions of having RNY at all but then i learned with a lap band i would only probably lose 45 - 50% of my weight i needed to lose. I needed to lose 150 lbs and i would probably only lose 75 or so.  And i would have to work my butt off to get those 75 lbs down.  So i quickly decided against that.  I am glad i had the RnY...I have had zero problems so far.  But i also got in on the surgery just days before they changed what you need to have surgery.  I think now with tricare you have to show 6 months worth of something showing you tried to lose weight on a program and you have to have the comorbidities of which i had and you have to have the BMI within their range.  I am glad i got in on the old way with tricare..lol

good luck with the surgery...

Thank you for your story .I actually think its easier to get approved by Tricare now then before if they wouldnt have changed I would def. not getting a surgery cuz I wouldnt qualify. Well I did do weigh****chers for 6 months and did a weight loss class on Post here so that schould be enough  but I guess I just have to wait and see :-) I so hope Tricare appoves my surgery .....

Actually Tricare does cover the VSG, If it is done on a base that has a Bariatric clinic. Ft Hood is one that does. There are several people on the Sleeve Forum that had it done there..............

thats cool they cover it at some military installations.  but i don't live close enough to one that covers it so in the civilian world tricare doesn't cover Vertical Sleeve...
