Doing it alone

I'm considering RNY. I'm single and my family is 7 hours away. Has anyone done this by themselves?

I'm by myself. I did have my mom come up for 3 days, just in case. Other than that, I've been on my own ever since. I do have a boyfriend, but he is a driver for a living and just wasn't around to take care of me. You'll be fine. To be honest, I didn't really even need my mom to be there. It was nice to have company, but she truly didn't need to come.

I had RNY June 29, 2011 and have told noone except my husband.  My family literally live within seconds of me, they do not know about it.  I have 5 year twins and run a home daycare as my husband is gone 6 days a week for work and the fire dept.  Yes, he is supportive, but isn't home much!  He stayed with me at the hospital until I was in my room and more awake, then had to leave to take care of our kids.  He came back two days later to get me and did stay home from work that day.  I believe that if this is something that you want to do for yourself, that you can do it!  You do need a ride home from the hospital though.  I did 6 months of doctor appointments and supervised diet.  I also had numerous tests to rule out co-morbidities as well as bariatric psychologist appts.  I was able to figure out how to get them all done and what to do with my kids.  Long story short, you can do it for yourself if you really want to!!!  I wish you great luck and even greater success!

I can't say I did it alone, but I too recouped at home just fine and tried to do more for myself than my family wanted to let me. Besides getting home from the hospital, which you'll need some help with, I'd say alone with check ins on YOUR schedule should go well. Best wishes!!

I did it alone and am happy I did. I took the time to focus on myself, not get distracted by needs of others. I haven't had one problem. Lost 155 pounds in 17 months. Couldn't be happier. I also didn't tell anyone. I'm v. private and its no one's business. When I read the struggles of others on this board, of unsupportive friends and spouses and/or coworkers, I'm glad I didn't tell anyone.

Go for it, that's what we are here for! I didn't do alone, but I did too. It's complicated. I think it would have been easier without the little 'help' I did have. I could have driven myself home from the hospital even. Whatever you decide, make the decision that's best for you!

I had someone drive me home, and a neighbor took me to the grocery store about a week later, but I was OK by myself and didn't mind the peace and quiet at all.

Just take pain meds as needed, walkwalkwalk, sipsipsip, chewchewchew.

Very important:

Nap as needed.

Goodluck!

By no means would I have done this alone. I have a very good friend that has taken me to the ER twice, one of which required a 4 day hospital stay. I have also had two dilatatons that my mom went with me for since I needed a driver. My surgeon is 2 hours away from where I live, so not like I could take public transportation either.  Without the support of the surgical team, my friend, and my parents, I think I would be insane.

i `couldnt have done it alone without my hubby, we have 2 boys... and he took 2 weeks off to stay with me and help me.. and im super glad he did, he wanted to, if your family is not around hire a nurse to come in at least for 3 hours a day to check on you and help you out, i would have if my husband had not been able to take the time off...dont act strong, if you need someone call on someone... but if you truly feel you wont need anyone then go for it.... best of luck to you!!
