How much work did you miss after RNY?
Hi I am new to this site. Very excited about my upcoming surgery. I have a lap-band and it has slipped I am going to have my band removed and RNY performed at the same time . My surgeon says I will be in the hospital 5 days with the NG tube in longer and the leak test on day 4 due to the lap band. She said to try to take off two weeks. Right now I only have a week and two days available. I could postpone the surgery and wait to accumulate more time but I really don't want to.
My co-workers know about the surgery and are not supportive at all. They are making me feel very guilty about taking this time off for surgery.
Just wondering how much time did you need off work after surgery?

Morning and welcome! This is a great board that is for the majority, very supportive.
I had RNY and obviously you are having a revision which I have not. But to answer from my perspective I would take 2 weeks off, minimum. I took 4 weeks off and it was just right for me. There are many different restrictions than the band that you will have to get use to as well as different healing process all together. I felt weak at the 2 weeks mark and for me I am very glad I did not got back that soon. For some they either choose to or had to go back at 2 weeks, I have seen those posts.
For me the pain was very minimal just felt like I did tons of sit ups the night before. My best advice post-op. No matter how bad the gas hurts getting up and walking will make it better. I never had gas pains but I literally walked the halls of my step down unit every hour to hopefully not get those pains.
So in my opinion if you need the vacation time to pay for being out of work, wait if you can so you can take those 2 weeks.
As for your co-workers. Mine have been supportive to but I made a great effort to educated them if they had any questions and for me "including" them in pre/post of sucess was educational for them and they felt like they kinda helped make this happen as well and without works support (for me) it's true. Letting them know that this will make you healthier and be able to perform life's activites more efficently, will also make you a better performing employee/co-worker. I also ordered (i know so bad) pizza for all of work while I was gone as the smallest thank you for them picking up the slack for me while I was gone.
I will be out for another 2 weeks in a month due to an inguinal hernia repair and I feel very guilty about it but what can I do? Thank them , cover shifts when they need it and you do your best and forget the rest.
Good luck to you!

I just had my revision on the 27th and the healing process seems to be much easier for me than when I had the band placed. I went into the hospital on the Tuesday and was d/c'd on the Thursday. I didn't have any drains or tubes however. I feel very good.... sore and tired but nothing that I can't handle.
My doctor took me out of work for 6 - 8 weeks. I'm not allowed to drive until I go to see him next week. I would take as much time as you can. You don't want to have any complications from the surgery and make sure your good to yourself. This is major surgery.
Best of luck

I also had a revision from a band to RNY. I took 6weeks and am just going back on Monday. I didn't have an NG tube and I had my leak test done on the morning after surgery. The first week was a cake walk and then ended up having 2 dilatation over the next week as well as IV fluids x2, so be sure to be getting your liquids in. I had quite a bit of scar tissue around the band, so they said it was a bigger surgey than we had expected. I work at a job where I am on my feet most of the time and do lots of lifting, so have been a little more cautious than if I had a desk job. Still hesitatant to go back to work, but need to go back sometime!!

I took one week off for a lap rny and esophageal hernia repair. Not a revision, obviously, although the hernia was a surprise.
Then again I work at the hospital where I got it done, and felt a bit more comfortable knowing that if I had an issue at work, I only had to walk downstairs for help. 2-6 weeks is more the norm from what I hear.
