Another vitamin questions...sorry

Ok, Poet Kelly freaked me out (love you girl) about my Vitamin D levels.

So I asked the DH to go out and get me some Vit D.....I have told him 100 times if I have told him once NO GELS!  Well he got me D3 liquid in a small gel cap, like a tiny Vit E tablet is what it reminds me of.  Will this work?  Can I take this?  I don't want to waste the bottle which we already paid for and opened.  I just ask because I see everyone talk about dry Vit D3 and I wonder why.

Calcium?  What kind do we need?  I know there are 2 kinds, so can we have either of them or is one better then the other?

Sustained release?  Is it ok if our vits are a bit coated or say sustained release?  My B Complex and iron say sustained release and have a bit of a coating on them, but nothing much more then my multi vit that also has a bit of a coat on it.

What do you think?  Are there certain things I should be looking for?  The only thing I really hate, and I really really hate it, are chewables so other then calcium I don't do chewable vits.

Thanks for your help!

Calcium you need is CITRATE.  Nor Carbonate.

I don't think sustained release works for us since we don't have as much intestine to absorb therefore the last released does not get absorbed.

Liquid Vitamin D.  Look to see if there is oil listed.  Since we malaborb fats if it is in oil we won't absorb it well.

It needs to be a vit D with no oil. Even look at liquids and their ingredients first. I have found at my local Sprouts a brand called Michaels that are sublingual with no oil in the ingredients.

As far as calcium, it needs to be citrate and there are a lot of options out there. I have only found chewable citrate on the bariatric vitamin websites, which are nice for a treat but pricy.

Target, Walmart, Kroger and a host of other stores all have a calcium citrate generic which works great. You can also order some Upcal D which is a powder you can blend into a drink.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you won't about Vit D gels because it is in an oil and we don't digest those well. You will need to get dry Vit D, which I bought from VitaLady.
We absorb calcium citrate (not carbonate) and tablets can be bought generic, which does have dry D, but not enough if your levels are low. Read the labels because some have per serving which is 2 tabs. We need between 1500-2000 mg of calcium daily.
I'm not sure about substained released. I take Nexium capsules and they are time release. I was on them several years before surgery and continue to take them. Apparently I'm absorbing them fine because I've not had any problems.

typo correction.  I meant to say:  ...you won't absorb (not about) Vit D because it is in an oil...

I just say sorry because I have seen so many posts about vitamins and being this far out and on this board this often I should know this stuff by heart.

Honestly, I have not taken the vitamin part of this very seriously.  I have taken them, don't get me wrong, but not with a conscience effort.  I just took what the doctor said to take and didn't really take the time to think about why I am taking it.  I didn't even really know there were different kinds of calcium or that Vit D could not be oil.  No one tells me this stuff, they just hand me papers with lists and I did not think to ask.  So I am going to go to the store today and really shop with my conscience brain and get the stuff I really need......

That's why I said sorry

No need to apologize.

You already got your answers.

The D you got won't work, you need calcium CITRATE, and no extended release meds or vites because our digestive tract is now shorter than normal and you won't absorb it all.

Are you taking a swallowable B?  You need either liquid or sublingual or you aren't getting anything from them.
