OT: awesome shows on Food Network

So one bariatric-related and one just sad....

Right now I'm watching a show called The Big Waste, where 4 chefs are challenged to make a banquet out of foods that would just be sent to a landfil. It just makes me sad to think of how much food goes wasted every day! I really try not to waste anything unnecessary but this is bringing me more thought of modifying how I shop & choose food.

Second show that caught my eye is a show called Fat Chef... will be watching, just to see how they portray the overweight/obese chefs. Hopefully there'll be a healthy change in store for them.....

The Big Waste was great.  It just amazed me what they could do with all that "garbage".   I am looking forward to Fat Chef too.

My X-Father in law use to work at a military base. There was so much food wasted. He said he tried to get them to take it to a shelter, but the government say that it was not allowed.

The soldiers could not take extra home with them either.

And they wonder why we are trillions in debt, that we have so much hunger in this country.

So sad.

resteraunts and grocery stores also have to throw out a lot of food according to the law.  There is also the concern that if someone were to get sick from it then  they might be sued.

A lot of medical supplies are also thrown out.  Once a box has been opened all unused supplies are considered unsafe.  I have heard that many hospitals are using them on mission trips since they don't have to deal with the red tape.

Some restaurants (including Disney) donates their unused food (which they can't after a certain amount of time) to Second Harvest.    There are Second Harvest branches throughout the country.

I've seen stats say anywhere from 25-50% of all food produced in the US goes to waste.  Can you imagine?  I've been a lot more careful lately about not wasting food.

I watched the Big Waste last night too.  I was appalled.  I want to see if  I can get my daughters Girl Scout troop to create some movement with our local farms.  So sad.

We have started a compost pile with our food waste. This summer we will have a good nutrient rich soil for the garden. I know of a farmer who grows beans for Delmonte. Last year he was ordered to till under 40 acres of surplus beans. It is shocking how much waste there is. Karen
