I have been using this same recipe that Kelly is using for about 4 months now.

The only thing that I can tell different is that my whites are not  as "bright white" as they use to be.
So I have started using a little bleach to all whites. I like the idea of adding an essential oil for fragrance but be careful, some fragrances can stain.

Other than that I love it. I saved several empty laundry bottles to put it in so I am not having to handle the large five gallon bucket all the time. I just keep refilling.

Glad to hear it works well for you.  I bet adding a little extra borax to white loads would work too, if you don't like using bleach.

I use your same recipe Kelly - I've been doing it was about 6 months and I think it saves a lot of money.  I like the outcome as well.  I do add essential oils.

What's your recipe and would it work in a front loader? (HE)

The recipe I am using calls for one bar of Fels-Naptha laundry soap (found it at Meijer with the bath soap), one cup Arm and Hammer washing soda (not laundry detergent, but found in the aisle with the laundry detergents) and one cup borax.

You chop up the bar of soap (which ought to count as exercise, that stuff is not so easy to cut up), boil a big pot of water, then put the soap pieces in it and simmer until the soap is all dissolved, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, you put the cup of borax and cup of washing soda in a five gallon bucket (cost me $4 at mennards).  When the soap is all dissolved, you pour that in the bucket and stir until the powders are all dissolved.  Then you add hot tap water and stir until your bucket is full.

I don't know about a front loader.  Maybe someone else knows.

I used to make my own too but then I discovered Charlie's Soap.  It works great in my HE washing machine and I bough a 5 gallon bucket of it over 3 years ago now and still have maybe a half bucket left.   You only need about a tablespoon per load.
Blessings!

Yes, it's a liquid soap.

The instructions I found said that the Fels-Naptha laundry soap works best but if you don't have that, you can use any bar of soap.  I found the Fels-Naptha at my regular grocery store and it only cost $1 so I went ahead and got that.

I also added some eucalyptus oil to mine.  Now I'm excited to try it.  I have a couple loads worth of powdered detergent to use up first, though.  I am doing laundry tomorrow!
