Body Fortress Protein Shakes vs. Protein Shots...
RNY on 01/03/12
I tried the Body Fortress shots and was informed that the protein content wasn't suitable for those of us who had gastric bypass, but I've also seen alot of posts from people that use the BF Whey Protein Shakes.
I've been using Bariactric Advantage's Protein Meal Replacement on-the-go bottles that go for $3 per bottle. Today, while at Wal-Mart, I saw a big container of the BF Chocolate Whey Protein Powder for only $15 and purchased the chocolate flavor to try.
Can someone reassure me that this is an accpetable source of protein...are we getting the full amount of protein grams that is stated on the stats?
The price is so much cheaper than the BA brand of protein powder that I'm now worried that something crucial is missing from Body Fortress...

The reason that they shots aren't good is because the main ingredient is collagen. It doesn't have all the amino acids we need.
The powder, though, has whey protein, right? So that has all the amino acids. It's fine.

As long as the protein is WHEY protein -- whey protein isolate seems to be the most common -- or something not labeled as "whey" but also milk-based (like casein), it is fine. There are also some other sources, like soy protein, that are fine.
The protein that you should avoid is collagen protein. Sometimes it is listed as "Hydrolyzed Collagen(ic)" protein. Even if it has whey protein as the second type of protein, it is primarily collagen and should be avoided. The tip-off that it is collagen is that it allegedly has a huge amount of protein in a very small amount of liquid. I am not aware of ANY protein powder that is collagen based.

I appreciate all of your replies.
I purchased the BF Super Advanced WHEY Protein powder. Says it's scientifically designed with: Premium Whey Protein, Over 8 Grams of BCAAs, Crystalline Taurine, Lean Mass Activators, Glutamine.
I'm going to give it a try...hope it tastes better than the Bariactric Advantage's shakes...those were awful!!!

The BF Chocalate did not taste good to me at all...I felt so nauseaus after drinking it because of the horrible after taste...even after brushing my teeth, I could still taste something from the shake.
I'm a member of Sam's Club, but not Costco. Is there somewhere you can buy a small serving of Premier Protein to try it out....I don't want to buy a huge quantity and did not like it.
I'm going to try the Quest bar next.

Qust bars are really good. You might also try Syntrax Nextar, some of the flavours are stronger and because they are mixed with water not milk, and are drink mix flavoured you can mix in crystal light to mask any whey taste. You can order a sampler pack to let you find a flavour that works: http://www.mybariatricpantry.com/SYNTRAX_NECTAR_PROTEIN_POWD ER_SAMPLES_p/nectar-sample.htm
