Just a question, I am doing the presurgery high protein/low carb diet. I was told it was to shrink my liver for surgery. What happens if my liver doesnt shrink, or I dont do as well as I should in the "diet" phase? Will they not be able to do the surgery? Will they get in there and say "nope, cant do it!"

How would the doctor know if your liver is properly shrunk?  I've been told that the liver shrinking thing is about getting a good view through the laparascope.  I suppose the doctor might switch to an open surgery or make larger incisions if there wasn't a good enough view.  When I had my surgeries for endometriosis, the doctors said they would simply convert to an open surgery if they couldn't do it laparoscopically.  You should ask your surgeon what he or she will do.

A friend of mine did have her surgery cancelled.  She took an NSAID pain reliever too close to the surgery date and it was deemed an unacceptable risk to the surgeon.   As long as your follow your doctor's instructions, you should get in and out with no cancellations, though.

I am having surgery tomorrow and I didn't cheat at all on my liquid diet reason being is because I want to make sure that my surgery goes as smooth as possible and if I am not focused enough to that what will happen after surgery will I be able to follow the rest of the phase diets. To me surgery is a second chance at life and I am so greatful that I got it. I hope that you take this serious and do what your surgeon suggests to keep yourself as healthy as possible. the best of luck to you

Some surgeons WILL close you back up without doing the surgery if the liver is too big for them to feel they can do the surgery safely without damaging the liver.  (Apparently, nicking the liver is a very serious complication!) Others will convert your lap surgery to open instead.  Still others will continue on with the surgery but it may take longer or the surgeon may have trouble doing it.

i would prefer if they closed me back up if they deemed the surgery too unsafe. why go through even more risks? i'm in the minority that didn't need to do the liver shrinking or liquid diet pre-op.

I did see a post here where the surgeon stopped the surgery, sewed her back up and made her do a longer pre-surgery diet.

I had a 6-week Optifast diet.  I had to weigh in every 2 weeks.  I was told if I had a 5 lb. gain at any weigh in they would cancel my surgery.  I lost 30 lbs. and the NP said the surgeon mentioned that I had no fat on my liver.  He was thrilled.

I lost almost all the weight I was supposed to before surgery.  I read in my op report that the doctor had to use 2 instruments to hold up my liver.  don't know how mormal that is.
