Why did you choose a RNY VS. VSG?

Why did you choose a RNY over a VSG?  Obviously, I am on a RNY board, so people here are choosing to have a RNY.  You must have really good reasons or you would have chosen a VSG.  Are your doctors recommending the RNY?  Is insurance recommending the RNY?  Why are they recommending RNYs?  I chose the RNY 6 years ago over the lap band but I honestly would have had the VSG if it were available at that time.  Not bypassing anything would have made more sense to me. I just wanted to be less hungry.  I read from a poster that after a few years the bypass absorbs calories  anyways.  Personally, I know this is true.  Then she said that we only don't absorb vitamins...is that true?  What is the point of the bypass?   Why are they still recommending  RNYs?  Why did you choose the RNY over the VSG?  thanks, Tri

VSG wasn't covered by my insurance.  I wouldn't have chosen it anyyways. I like how the RNY works and it's been a great tool in changing my lifestyle.

I was considering the sleeve but my insurance co. didn't cover it.   They would only cover lapband or gastric bypass.  It's too bad because I feel that we should have the ability to look at all four surgeries that are available to us.

With that said, I've been very happy with my RNY.  I really feel like I needed that malabsorption.   I have had no complications and have had good, steady weight loss.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi Sandy
Yes you have done really well with the RNY.  I have not had any complications either.  I wonder why some insurances won't cover the VSG.  In the long run it must cost a lot less and I think the surgery is cheaper too.  I am really glad you are happy with the RNY.  Good health to you, Tri

Because my insurance would not cover VSG.

It is true that over time we begin absorbing all our calories again, but we never absorb vitamins normally.

I assume they still do RNY because 1) it has a long track record of being a successful WLS 2) the malabsorption of calories in the beginning helps the weight come off faster and 3) it usually resolves GERD while VSG can actually make GERD worse.  There may be other reasons, too, but that's just what comes to mind right now.

I forgot about the gerd.  That is definitely something to consider when choosing a surgery, especially if you have it really badly.  I have heard of VSGs causing gerd.  I wonder if that goes away after a while.  Thanks, Tri

Insurance didn't cover sleeve, so that's where my interest stopped.

I think my RNY cost about $35,000...definitely something that needs to be considered.  thanks, Tri

RNY was recommended by my surgeon because of my severe reflux.  No reflux since surgery - that alone would have made it worth it.
