Flavored vs. Plain Greek Yogurt

I'm over a year out now and I stayed away from the flavored greek yogurts for a very long time because I did initially dump and their sugar content is on the higher side. Now, how much of that sugar content is from the naturally occuring lactose and fructose and how much of it is from the evap cane juice, I don't know, but I decided to err on the side of caution.

But, after my system and sugar came to an aggreement of sorts, lol, I started eating the flavored Chobanis. I like the convenience of grabbing one to take to work. So far, no issues.

I do still however buy the plain Fage tubs for home use.

I eat the plain one and sweetened it myself.  That way I control the sugar.

Plain Chiobani  - 100 calories, 7g of sugar, and 18 g of protein

Flavored (Apple Cinnamon) Chiobani (my hubby loves them) - 140 calories, 19g of sugar, and 14 g of protein.   Evaporated cane juice as the additional sugar from the fruit.

Seems to me that the plain also has more protein, which is a plus for me.  I'll stick with that and flavor it myself.

I love Chobani greek yogurt. Easy on the stomach, high in protein and I'm still losing while eating the flavored ones.

I appreciate everyone sharing their take on this. I'm surprised how many are not put off by the sugar content of the flavored yogurts. I'm not judging - goodness knows I can tolerate a decent amount of sugar and will if there is no good substitute. But for the Greek yogurt, I've always approached it as wasting my sugar (if I was going to have it) because I could doctor up a plain one and have it taste just as good, if not better.

As for the convenience factor, I keep a few Splenda in my handbag and can easily carry some SF jam in a small plastic container to mix with the plain yogurt if I am not at home. This might not work for some, but I have no problem with doing it. I think the bottom line is what counts for all of us - this is a great source of protein!

I'm with you. I buy plain, flavor it myself. Firstly, I like having control! Secondly, carb comas in the middle of the day are inconvenient. Lastly, I will either dump or have a blood sugar crash, neither of which is fun.

Another 'buy it plain' person here. I need plain for cooking & prefer it for smoothie base.

For my afternoon snack, I  add about 1/3 of a packet of a single-bottle packet of Crystal Light in a yummy flavor, stir well & drop in a few frozen blueberries. Yummy!!!

I'd also rather 'spend' any sugar calories elsewhere, such as a small portion of desert once or twice a week rather than on a daily item. Just too much sugar added to the pre-flavored yogurts  for my liking.

Costco has a great deal on their Kirkland brand Greek yogurt. 64oz (packaged in two 32oz tubs) for $6.99.

I appreciated all of the responses in this thread - thank you! I have an interesting update to report. I decided to try a flavored Greek yogurt, just to make a comparison to what I do now with my flavoring the plain ones, and to see how I would react to the sugar.

I made a deal with myself that I would look for a flavor that I could NOT create at home with my SF syrups. I found an Oikos Key Lime flavor that was perfect. And oh, was it DELICOUS!! It has a strong, tart flavor and went down very easily. After trying it once, I knew I had a winner.

The next night, I decided to put one of the Key Lime yogurts into a bowl and mix it with one of the plain flavor of the same size (making 2 servings total). This way, I cut the sugar of the Key Lime flavor about in half, with no loss of protein. It was still delicious - the flavor wasn't diminished all that much because it was so strong to begin with. So this is the PERFECT way for me to enjoy this yogurt and still be comfortable with the sugars and calories. I even took a fat free graham cracker and crushed it up over a serving to make it "feel" like key lime pie. I'm very pleased with the way this worked out!
