Flavored vs. Plain Greek Yogurt

I see a lot of people eating the flavored Greek yogurt and my bariatric nurse even mentioned it once when recommending snacks to post-ops.

I stay away from it because of the VERY high sugar content. Instead, I use the plain Greek yogurt and add Splenda, SF jam, or SF syrup. I have so many different syrups that I can have virtually any flavor I want without the added sugars.

Where do others stand on this topic? I'm curious. Thanks.

I eat the Fage 0% flavored yogurts because they are not that high in calories, and they taste so good.

But I like your system- I do that sometimes.

I only use plain 0% greek yogurt. If I want something with flavour, I use the Source or Silhouette 100 ml. mini flavoured NSA ones.

The sugar content is milk sugar, aka lactose, which is different from refined sugar. You'll be fine with the Greek yogurts.

Macortiz, you mentioned the milk sugar. I'm pretty sure the flavored yogurts have a higher sugar content due to the flavoring and not just the milk sugar. That's why I've stayed away from them. I realize most dairy items have natural sugar due to the milk, but with the flavored Greek yogurts, the "flavored" part is not natural.

the flavored ones do contain lactose, of course, but other sugars as well.  For instance, black cherry chobani contains evaporated cane juice - that's another name for sugar.  Oikos strawberry contains both sugar as well as lactose from the milk and fructose from the fruit.

I actually eat the flavored ones and have had no problems with them and I am losing the weight. It has helped alot because I am on a strong antibiotic for a sinus infection and have had no stomach issues at all.

I'm with you on this... I only buy the plain and flavor it up myself.  It's also awesome to always have some on hand when you're cooking (I regularly substitute plain greek yogurt of sour cream in recipes) and I've found that when I add Splenda, SF French Vanilla syrup and a tablespoon of SF seedless blackberry preserves that it's the absolute best yogurt I've ever had...

Best thing?  I get the generic brand of plain greek yogurt from the Harris Teeter grovery store down here (NC)... cheap, often on sale (so even cheaper!) and really nice texture once stirred up!
