Glucosamine and Chondroitin Absorption Question
Hi all:
My knees are creaking a lot lately (image that, 100+ pounds lost and THEN they start to creak!)....
Anyway, this has happened to some others in my family who have had a lot of luck with taking a Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplement.
Has anyone tried these?
Does anyone know how/if we absorb these?
Thanks very much!!
Mary

I took them for over a year pre-op and it did not help the arthritis in my knees at all, so I quit taking them. (I suspect that their usefulness depends on the severity of the joint damage.) I don't know whether our bypass impacts absorption of these...

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I have severe knee damage, and arthritis and this was the primary reason that I chose to have Gastric Bypass. Glucosamine has kept me mobile and kept me off of crutches and out of the wheelchair. I have no idea why some benefit significantly from it , and others dont.
I will say that you have to find the dosage that works for you, and it can take 2 weeks to 1 month before you feel any significant relief, and that's with missing no days. If you miss a day, it's a setback.
So, since gastric bypass, I take a liquid forumla called "Wellnesse". It has 2,000mg of Glucosamine, and 1500 of Chondroitin, and MSM. This formula works as good as the GNC brand that I was taking pre-op. I pick up the "Wellnesse" from GNC, however I suppose you can also get it online.
I'd recommend it, to see how you do. My knees are so severely damaged, I am in constant pain, however I have so much less inflammation, and it keeps my knees from locking up.

Take a LIQUID glucosamine supplement. I've read studies that show only 10-15% of the glucosamine from pills absorbed into the body. Studies on liquid glucosamine show that 80-85% of glucosamine is absorbed. From my experience, this is true.
I've taken several different brands and types, mostly the pill kind. I completely gave up and decided that glucosamine wasn't my thing. Then, my sister gave me a bottle of Synflex Liquid Glucosamine. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. They offer a 90 day, no questions asked guarantee, so you have nothing to lose. www.synflexamerica.com
