Chantix - Quitting Smoking (AGAIN)

I had my RNY almost 11 weeks ago.. I quit smoking for 90 days for my surgery using Chantix. I know how bad this is.. but I started smoking again about 5 weeks after surgery (So I have been smoking for almost 6 weeks now). Stupid.. I know and now the full on addiction is back.

I bit the bullet and told my Doctor this week and she prescribed me Chantix again. I have taken my second dose today and it makes my stomach cramp for 15 minutes after I take it. It didn't do that before so I assume maybe I should take it with food and that my tummy is more sensitive than before (I used to have a rock hard stomach and be able to take anything).

I know all of the risks of smoking after RNY, thats why I am paying the $175 a month for the Chantix. I feel so silly to have started up again, I took a few drags from someones cig and then next thing I know I am smoking a 1/2 a pack a day (still better than I used to but not acceptable either).

Just wanted to kind of ***** about how silly I am to have done this to myself again. Now I have to keep my fingers crossed that I haven't given myself an ulcer in the process.

I gave up smoking 9 years ago and know that one puff and I'll be back on a pack a day - no doubt!  It is absolutely my drug of choice.

Good for you in recognising what you have done and remedying it!   I would take it with a litle something if it makes your pouch grouchy - maybe a protein snack?

Good luck in quitting the evil weed!!!

UGH! It is the worst and best, you know? And I should have known that those couple of drags would be just the beginning.

My doctor said the same thing, she was glad I came in and asked for the Chantix and admitted it to her. She said most people start back up and are too scared to tell the doctor. Honestly, I am more scared of the ulcers and other repercussions than of what my doctor would say.

I am going to try taking it with something when I take it tomorrow. Thanks for the luck, I need it!

I quit 3 yrs ago using Chantix.    I know alot of people that used it for 1 month and only quit smoking for a couple of months  I stayed on it for about 6 months   I wanted the habit to be gone  along with the addiction.   Then I weaned myself off it very slowly    I hope it works for you.

It took my mom two tries, as well (after quitting for several months the first time, she got stressed out and wanted "just one" and then started smoking again), but after smoking for over 40 years, she quit smoking using the Chantix almost 4 years ago.

You can do this!

Here's how mom quit cold turkey.

Dad was on a ventilator in ICU after surgery. He writes on a note that he wants a cigarette. The nurse tells him he's on oxygen and asks if he wants to blow the place up. She quit then and there.

Dad died of cigarettes at 67. Mom just turned 92. Dad's relatives tended to live into their 90's and a few lived to be over 100.

If you are not on a PPI already ask your doctors about it. Some presribe it routinely for up to a year after WLS to avoid an ulcer. You did the right thing in going to your doctor. Most people cannot quit on the first try. You were brave to admit it not to mention smart.
