Ok so I was told in my NUT counseling session
80-100 G of Protein a Day
1000  Calories
40 G of Fat
100 G of Carbs
8 Cups of Fluids a day
HIGHLIGHTED SHE PUT no more than 20G of Carbs and 8-10 G of Sugar per 8 oz serving.

So I have been so excited about this journey I went out and bought yogurts, cottage cheese, string cheese and been trying to figure this all out and eat right. But this AM it hit me I haven't been paying attention to the sugar.

Can you help?
Oikos Green Yogurt 5.6 oz so not even the 8 oz serving
Key Lime 160 cal 11 protein 17 sugar SO IS THIS OUT? I can't have it to much sugar?
Vanilla 120 cal 11 protein 18 sugar?????

Breakstone 2% cottage cheese 90 cal protein 4 sugar so this is a good one right? this is the small individual cups

String cheese I ate it was sargento reduced fat but 80 cal 7 protein didn't do the sugar  on this one when I made my handy book of nutritional info as I forgot the sugar....ugh

Pepperidge Farm Pretzels 20 pieces
sugar 3 pro 3 cal 140
I feel like this is a lot of calories to waste but just wanted to use the calculation that yea it meets all the rules so I could eat it right?

Any suggestions for foods with low sugar I would appreciate. I am loving bariatric foodie and egg on my face blogs/websites for recipes.

Thank you in advance.

Every surgeon has different rules. As far as the yogurt, most of the pre flavored yogurts have too much added sugar for me. All milk products have milk sugar (lactose) in them. I buy plain yogurts and flavor them up with sugar free syrups, like coffee shops use. World Market has a large selection in the store. Or you can find them online. Both of the blogs you mentioned talk about using these syrups.

The cottage cheese and string cheese should be fine.

Pretzels, not good for me. My surgeon or the Nut who works in his office, didn't give goals for daily amounts of anything. We were told the rule of 15. No more than 15 grams of carbs per mini meals, and at the end of the day your calories divided by protein should not be any more than 15. Pretzels just aren't worth the calorie spend for me.

The water thing, that is a minimum per day. I try to keep closer to 100 ounces.

Best of luck!

I saw that key lime oikos in the grocery store over the weekend & got so excited until I read the nutrition info.  Sucks to have to read labels so thoroughly, but for me, the calories were too high in relation to the protein.  I'm fine with yogurts with sugars in the 15-19 range, but no higher.

I really love lemon & lime yogurts, so I wish the protein was a little higher & the calories a little lower.

Having this surgery kind of forces you to have a crash course in nutrition & reading labels, doesn't it?

I thought reading labels for WW was one thing this takes it to another level. With WW I wouldn't dump if I ate something wrong...WOW so much to learn but it all makes sense. So I went and looked at all the wrong stuff I bought and said ok this is better vs what I was eating. I am awaiting a date so the DR and NUT said to start making changes so I am going to finish this off and buy the GOOD stuff next shopping trip. If anyone has a Harris Teeter near them Torani is 5.99 but they are doubling coupons and I have 1 coupons so I will get them for 3.99 I plan on stocking up on all the flavors for my plain food and drinks!

Thank you for the suggestions and I look forward to joining you on the losers bench soon!

You could mix the flavored yogurt with plain greek yogurt to cut the sugars/carbs. You will still get the flavor, it just won't be as strong. I now actually prefer the lighter flavor I get from mixing in plain yogurt. I mix them half and half.

Great idea!  My tastes have changed and now I'm finding the sweetened yogurts too sweet.  I've been mixing in only part of the fruit/sugar crap on the bottom to cut the sweetness, so I like your idea.

Yeah, I need to stop being so lazy and branch out!  I buy the ones that are already flavored strictly for convenience, so I can just grab one on my way out the door in the morning and not have to worry about packing additional flavorings/sweeteners/etc.
