antidepressants/absorbtion

Is it possible that some antidepressants won't absorb as well after surgery?

I've been so sad lately, so down.  I have less reasons to feel that way now that I've lost a decent amount of weight and continue to lose.  I don't know what's wrong with me. :(

Is it possible that the Zoloft that I'm taking (and have been for a long time now) isn't absorbing enough?

Most time released drugs and extended release drugs won't be absorbed properly.  Regular release should be absorbed but I'm not sure if that really works that way.  I think the only way to know for sure would be to have blood tests to check for the levels of the drug in your body.
The main thing is you have just had major surgery and most people get some depression after being under anesthesia.  It even says somewhere in my discharge papers that this could happen.  Couple that with the hormone dump that occurs with weight loss (hormones are stored in fat and when you lose fat the hormones are released into your bloodstream) and you may be an emotional wreck.  Talk to you doctor about possibly changing your meds or increasing your dose or just be aware of the possibility and that may make it easier.

I take Luvox and was supposed to crush the tablets.  I tried one and it was vile.  After that I broke the tablets in half and starting taking them with SF chocolate pudding.  I think they're working but they're definitely not extended release or anything like that.

Are yours in tablet form?  Could you break them and take them with a meal?

I hope you feel better soon.  I know how bad it is when you're feeling down.

Take care.

Make sure you don't crush any meds before checking w your doctor! Not the pharmacy but your dr. my dad died from splitting a time released pull which the pharmacy sold him the splitter.

Lady taz is right that all those hormones are running wild right now. Talk to your doc & hang in there!

Most antidepressants are absorbed solely in the portion of the intestine that has not been altered, so your absorption of them should not change.  As some others have pointed out, this surgery can make you very emotional both because of the physical aspects of having surgery and because of the psychological ramifications of the changes you are having to make in what you eat.  If the way you are feelings continues for several months, you may need to have your dose increased for a while (but not because it isn't being absorbed).

I too am on Zoloft and will have to change because the pill causes me a huge amount of pain in my pouch as soon as it gets in there. My psychiatrist wouldn't listen, she told me it was all in my head and my therapist should address it. I now cannot take it at all and have to find another doctor. Sorry to hear anyone else has this problem. No fun.

Hmmm... The Zoloft tablets are not very big so should not cause physical pain from their size and if you take the pill with a reasonable amount of water, you will wa**** right through the pouch and into the intestine so it would not cause problems related to it even starting to dissolve while still in the pouch. I would suggest trying to take it with more water before you abandon your psychiatrist.

I don't know why I have this problem.  I have tried every concievable combination to take this pill.  I have eaten something before it,  I have taken it with as much water as I can drink.  I have tried it with pudding, protein shakes, and protein bars.  I just don't know what my problem is.

I take celexa. I was off of it for a long time (on my own... I know, bad me). I've always had a horrible temper, but it wasn't a problem for me to rein it in (well, towards other people). Since surgery it felt like I had lost control of that rage so I started back on my Celexa (with my primary doc knowing) and it has helped TONS.
