Still Choking

7 weeks out from surgery, I am still not able to eat anything that isn't basically liquified and it's bumming me out. Even slimy pasta, egg drop soup and chili get stuck and cause me to throw up and have pain as they SLOWLY traverse my tube. So I called the surgeon's office today and on Monday I am having an EGD where they will put a balloon down my throat and try to stretch the opening a bit. Has anyone else had this done? How was it--was it successful?

Oh, and still nauseated every day, too.

Strictures are pretty common.   I did not have one, but it happens.  It's a pretty easy fix.  Sometimes people need more than one dilation, though.

Ack. So this is a stricture? I hope one dilation will do it! Thanks for the info.

Well, it sounds like that's what the surgeon is thinking it is.  That's how they fix a stricture.  If they do the endoscopy and find out the stoma is not too narrow, then they'll have to figure out what else is causing your problems.  But it sounds like a stricture.

It's just that the opening where they attach your intestine to your new pouch, the stoma, sometimes heals up too much.  Sometimes it becomes completely blocked, sometimes just partially blocked.  There's nothing that can be done to prevent it from happening, it just happens sometimes.

Well lucky me. I'm assuming this would cause the nausea as well? Thanks Kelly.

Are you on an acid blocker? when your stoma is swollen or has scar tissue your stomach acid builds up because it can't drain properly so you may be nausous from the acid.

No, I'm not on an acid blocker. Thanks, I'll ask the surgeon about it on Monday!

Many, many post op patients are on one for at least 6 months because they help prevent ulcers. If I were you I'd get some over the counter Prilosec tomorrow and take it. You can call the surgeon and get his or her approval if you'd feel more comfortable, but it would probably help you over the weekend.
