Hi everyone! I am not really telling many people about my surgery. I am anxious/scared about telling work I need some time off. I do not know what to tell them or how to go about it. Any suggestions?!

Telling work about your up-coming surgery.  That is all you tell them, you do not need to go into great detail, because it is your business what the surgery is for and no one else, unless you elect to tell those people.  I would assume that you have sick time?  Depending on how much time you take, short term disability might kick in too.

Alot of things depend on what type of work you do, a week off is not totally out of the question.  I had a office type job and that is the time I took off.  Others have said the same.

Good luck with your journey.

just curious, but why hide the truth?
ive told well over 150 people about my surgery already.. there will be suspicionsanyway, and i rather set it straight..

Besides, you better beprepared to have pretty much EVERYBODY you come in contact with ask you "so whats your secret, how did you do it, i need your advice, blah blah".. just sayin

You are right! Why am I hiding it?! Maybe, I am hiding the truth because I am embarrased about having to go through this. I do not know why I feel this way. But, I have to get over it and realize I am doing this to get healthy and live a long/full life. It is not like i haven't been successful in the past, but I have put the weight right back on. It sure is tiring!! I am completely ready to take this journey and why not open up about it. I have some people I know that are telling everyone and some that are telling only close friends/family. I am sure I will open up eventually, just taking some time!

I dont know where you work or how long you have worked there but I have a medium to heavy physical activity job. I have a little over a monthe off. I had to fill out all kinds of paper work for FMLA and short term disability. They also had to be filled out by my physician then turned back into work so they could file the paperwork. I dont know that you can hide it from management or at least your HR representive that will file the paperwork.
I have been very open about my decision. I believe it takes too much energy to maintain secrets and too many lies to keep those secrets. The truth sets you free. There is NOTHING for you to be ashamed of. It takes alot of courage to do what you have decided to do!!! You are making yourself healthy!! There maybe some people who wont understand. There are people who poop on everything because that is just who they are. The na-sayers of this world. Most will embrace you and encourage you in your decision.
Secrets mean you have to live in hiding and guarding every word you say. Its much too hard at least for me.

You will be surprised at how many people will tell you they have had WLS, or their sister, or friend,or so & so..on, and on. They will turn into a support group for you.  Or you will get questions from some that are considering the surgery.  It turns into a new conversation.  I have had so many friends and people that I hardly know tell me how proud they are of me.  That really means a lot and if I hadn't been upfront I would have missed all of the good parts of friendship.  So think about it....

I would definitely tell work you are having surgery - and I agree with the poster above - you don't have to tell anyone what kind of surgery.

Hopefully, your time off can be minimized.  I hoped for the best / planned for the worst.... ended up having surgery on Wednesday and returned the following Monday.  I had informed work that I might be out for as long as 2 weeks.

I agree with yahpraiser.  My husband had a medical procedure, and we planned on telling no one.  It was no big deal but no ones business.  However his Dr would not let him return to work when we thought he would be able to return, and it forced him to take short term disability.  With that...he had all kinds of paperwork to fill out, and, of course, he had to disclose the medical procedure.
