So in 2006 my husband was DX with diabetes. His entire family gets in later in life. So he controlled it with diet. We moved to NC from VA and he was doing great the Dr here said he thinks it was a mistake he never had diabetes. WHAT????
Well 2012 and he is peeing non stop and feels sluggish and just knows his blood sugar is up. He went on Friday it was 383 so he is on 4 pills a day for that, cholesterol and blood pressure meds. Our daughter had a bday this weekend he walked into our room at cake time. I said WOW we are going to be a lot of fun for the kids bdays we will light the candles watch them blow it out and walk into our rooms? That isn't how we should live.

I am scared for my kids. Diabetes is rampant in his family. I don't understand why either they aren't obese, they eat tons of veggies I guess it is just in the family gene. So I fear for my kids. I wanted to see since we are on low sugar diets couldn't I just start making meals for bariatric patients for my family? The kids can eat healthy too although I do make them eat healthy pretty much all the time.

I looked to see if he was qualified for RNY LOL he isn't even close after seeing the news that gastric bypass stalls diabetes. Before I start cooking up a storm and shopping do you think a bariatric type diet is the way to go? I go to see my dr for my 2nd to last weight check YAY and I am going to ask her for info on diabetes diets too. I also have been on the ADA website. I know that many of you were diabetic did you have a favorite website?

Thanks in advance I am a concerned momma and wife I need this man with me forever anything I can do to make him healthy I will do!

My opinion: Baratric diet is very high on proteins, and low on carbs. - For most people.  The low carb - will work- but the high proteins (post op RNY - some people have severe malabsorbtion of proteins - I do) .
On top of that - a lot of SF products contain a lot of artificial sweeteners  - I personally believe they are not good items for anybody.  To me - they are like poison - but for a while I was using them (and then developed allergic symptoms to them - sensitivities).  Now - I do use SF items - but I try to use as natural sweeteners (stevia, truvia, erythritol, etc) as possible.

For some people - the genetics will play a huge role - and they may get diabetes regardless of the weight and diet, Their pancreas is not strong and eventually does not make enough insulin.

Introducing good diet - lots of veggies, some fruits, healthy fats, fish and some meats.Limit empty carbs - simple carbs.  That will help.
I would also suggest trying to find a good naturopath doc or herbalist (someone with real education and experience)  and try to introduce some herbs and other natural way to help the person to possibly delay the issue.

My DH is diabetic, as well, as is most of his family. He is overweight, though, and is thinking he may have RNY after I do. I will be interested to see the responses you get. I understand about wanting him to be around for a long time!
