BAD DOCTOR VISIT

I'm a slow looser too. I went to my first support group after sugery (2/13/12) last night, so I'm not even two months out yet and everyone else was saying they had lost between 35 and 70 pounds in the first month, and I'm only at 30 pounds since surgery. I came out of surgery heavier than I went in, so I had all that swelling and extra fluid/gas to get rid of, so I feel behind. One guy was saying he's lost 4 pants sizes in a month!! I'm nowhere near that, maybe 1 pants size but still wearing the same clothes just with a belt. My shirts are bigger on me and I've had to adjust my bra down, so I'm watching inches. While my weight may not be dropping as quickly as I'd like there are changes occuring.

I also heard some people saying they're only eating 600 calories a day but not meeting their protein goals. I'm meeting my protein, but that gives you more calories. ???? Which is best? The nut emphasized getting the protein in to make sure you burn off fat and don't burn off your muscles, so that's what I'm focusing on and getting in all my fluids!!

I'm sorry the PA wasn't very supportive for you. You might just be a slow looser too and it'll just take longer, that doesn't mean you won't be successful. Make sure you are making healthy choices and following your diet plan and exercising and I think you'll make it!!

Good luck!!

That sounds really messed up to me. You've lost a great amount of weight in a short amount of time and seem to be on track. Your PA is an idiot in my opinion not to mention rude. Even if what she said were true (and I don't think it is as to how fast you should supposedly be losing or as to your daily calorie intake), the way she said it only would serve to discourage you rather than get you motifvated. I would call your surgeon and report her rudeness to that person and point out that you are doing well. I also dont' see the point of her saying you should have had DS since what's done is done and RNY is also an effective WLS tool. I really feel angry about the way she treated you and hope you stand up for yourself. Your surgeon's offie should know about her inaccurate, unprofessional, discouraging behavior.

My doctor was really disappointed with my weight loss at 6 months too, I can't remember exactly what the number was, but it was over 100bs. Kind of was a downer, but I'm losing for me not for his "stats".
My surgeon also told me not to look at boards like this too. I don't take everything that everyone says to me as 100% fact, it just helps me make an informed decision on what's right for me.
Certain things I've read on this board have helped tremendously.
Good luck. You're doing great!

I had to go back and look at my tracker to see where I was when I started keeping track here.  I had lost just over 45 lbs at 3 months so she really would have been pissed at me.  And for some reason, I really don't think my surgeon would be happy with a PA suggesting that the surgery he had just performed on me was not the one I should have had.  Could be wrong but I don't think so.   All that time and training and they don't really like people second guessing them that way.  Not to imply that your surgeon will always be right about everything.  Just that they don't like people trying to undermine them.

The previous poster is right.  That PA must have failed maith.

And 500 calories a day??  Now I was probably only getting 600-700 at 3 months out. I wasn't trying to keep calories down though at that point.  I was just trying to get my protein in everyday.  Not easy to do at under 500 calories.  Not for me anyway.

And if your calories get to low it will have the opposite effect on your weight loss as you get further  out.  Your body will try to hold onto every calorie because you burn more than 500 calories/day if you never get out of bed.

I am not big on complaining about people because so often it just doesn't seem to matter if you do.  But in this case, I would totally be talking to my surgeon.

Sorry you had to deal with such a moron.

Yesterday at my 6 week fu the doctor I see said average for 6 weeks is 15%-20% of total excess weight lost. I don't see that you don't fit in that range. Your PA sounds dumb.

You are doing FANTASTIC! Don't let that PA ruin your day!! Some people lose faster than others and as others here have said, if you keep up the same weight loss, you'll make the 120 lbs. in 6 months and if you don't, that's fine too. I'm at 7 months out and haven't quite gotten to 80 pounds lost yet.

Staying under 500 calories is NOT healthy. You also won't lose weight if you eat too few calories as your body will think you are in starvation mode.

I'd say keep doing what you were doing.
