Who cheated on pre-op liquid diet?
Just wondering how many people cheated on their pre-op diet and how awful I am.
I am on day 3 of my 15 day pre op diet and have cheated a tiny bit today (had noodles with my broth) and yesterday (had some popcorn)
I am just so gosh darn hungry. The protein shakes my dr gave me suck, broth is just not doin it for me. I feel like I'm not getting enough protein although I just found the special k protein additive that you add to your water. I've been doing the protein shakes, protein water, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles and its just not enough. How am I going to get through the next 13 days.

I didn't cheat at all because I was terrified I wouldn't be able to have the surgery. My Doc's nurse called to check on my progress and told me that day the Doc started a surgery but could not do the rny because the patient did not follow the diet. I had a terrible 2 weeks on the diet but I stuck to it. I am sure a lil slip here and there is ok but becareful, it can be a slippery slope.
Hi, I am 5 days post-op and I specifically asked my surgeon how my liver looked during the surgery. He said he had had 2 hard surgerys that day and he obviously saved the best with me last! lol... anyway he said my liver looked fantastic and I did lose 15 pounds during the 2 weeks... now to answer your question... yes I did cheat... but only with protein! I had 2 eggs in the morning and a 3 oz very lean steak at night IF I was hungry.... The key to the diet is protein, protein, protein!!!! Fill in the rest with s/f jello, s/f popsicles... oh and I even had some cashews... again PROTEIN! Don't over do it but at least for me it worked very well!
I only had to have liquids the day before surgery, but I can guarantee that if I had to do an extended liquid diet, I would have cheated. I was on a liquid protein diet a number of years ago and cheated on it because I was hungry and I wanted to CHEW something.
You are not awful. You are human. Do the best you can and don't sweat it too much. Just be sure to follow everything to the letter for the 72 hours before surgery!

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I was Optifast for 6 weeks prior to surgery. We could choose from 2 soup flavors, 3 shake flavors and 2 or 3 bar flavors. We were allowed 2 bars a day. Our NUT also allowed us 1 cup of raw veggies a day from the following list: celery, lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers with red wine vinegar. That helped my need to chew a lot. I did not cheat much but my daughter's graduation was the Saturday (4 days prior to surgery) and I was at the all all day. I did have a skinless chicken breast at one point. My cheatings was mostly protein as well. I wanted the best head start on weight loss I could get.
You will be fine. Most people who are on a liquid diet for any length of time struggle and slip up. Do the best you can and when you need to eat, eat protein.

I did the first day. Forget what it was, but it was sorta like what you did. Nothing really big. That was the only time though. I wanted to be sure I shrunk my liver so the dr. could do the surgery. He said I was a text book case! I practically lived on popsicles. I believe the pre - op protein shakes are why I can't drink them now!
It's hard, but keep telling yourself, you can make it!!

I guess I'm lucky. My doc put me on a cabbage soup diet the week before surgery. My diet went as follows:
DAY 1: Cabbage soup and all the fruit I want, no banana
DAY 2: Cabbage soup and all the vegetables I want, baked potato with butter for dinner
DAY 3: Cabbage soup and DAY 1 and 2, no potato
DAY 4: Cabbage soup and up to 6 bananas, and all the skim milk (made a banana smoothie)
DAY 5: Cabbage soup and 10-20oz of beef and a can of tomatoes
DAY 6: Cabbage soup and all the vegetables I want
DAY 7: Cabbage soup and brown rice and unsweetened juice
I am going into day 7 and the only thing I did was yesterday when I made hamburger, I used ketchup but I don't consider that cheating because there was tomatos in the soup and I was supposed to have a can of tomatoes but I am tomatoed out....I have done what the doc told me. A friend of mine was supposed to follow the same diet but only lasted a couple days. She then ate what she wanted, which she shouldn't have. Needless to say, they did her surgery. Doing the diet preop just shrinks your liver to allow more room for them to work around in your abdomen. I would say, try to do your best to do what the doctor says. We are all human. If you continue to have a problem, you could always call your doctor's office and ask what they suggest. Good luck..

The first 3 to 4 days are the hardest. Once you make it through those without cheating, the cravings and your appetite will be greatly reduced and you will find it easier to make it through the pre-op diet. Since you have already cheated, you have to start from tomorrow and make it through the next 3 days to get rid of the cravings. But, the goal of the diet (to shrink your liver so it -- and other organs-- is not damaged during the procedure) is VERY important. You are putting yourself at higher risk by cheating. Keep your eye on the ball, it's only a short time in the scheme of things. You can do it!!!

I cheated a few times but it was with egg drop soup and lean ham. If you must cheat do it with protein. Its hard but it does get better after a few days but not if you cheat with carbs and fat then you will just crave more.
It will be a lot easier to get through the diet if you don't cheat at all...ketosis eventually takes over and your appetite will go away, and so will the cravings..I know it seems impossible but if you can gain the willpower early on to just say no, it will make the rest of the time that much easier because you can look back and say you made it through the hardest part. Good luck and stay strong!
