Fluids/Vitamin questions

I am 4 days postop and am having trouble getting in 64oz of water.  Do you have any suggestions?  Can you count your protein drink as fluids or is that separate.  I am on a clear liquid diet.  Also, do I need to follow the 30 minute before/after meal seeing as I'm on a full liquid diet.  The only thing I am taking that is not clear is my protein drink and the yogurt (maybe 2Tbsp) when I take my Tylenol 3.  it makes it easier to swallow, as I cut it in quarters because I worry it is going to get stuck and cause erosion in my new pouch.  Rather be safe than sorry.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  I was unable to find a MVI without iron and I am starting with Source of Life Liquid vitamin (Yuck).  So I need help on how to schedule my MVI, Calcium and Iron.  I have to take my Synthroid first thing in the morning (6am).  I take the Calcium Petites but in order to get close to 1500mg, I have to take 4 tablets twice daily.  Below is what I have:

Synthroid
MVI (has iron)
Iron
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B-Complex
Calcium
Vitamin D3

I know I take the Calcium with the Vitamin D3 but not with ANY iron.  That is where I am having the difficulty.  Please help me....I would like to start taking this as soon as I can to get in the habit before I go back to work.  Thanks for everything....

Also, how long does it take to lose this horrible water weight from the surgery.

I have not had my surgery yet but started a schedule anyways.

0600 Levoxyl (thyroid medication)
0800 breakfast with B-12 and Biotin
1000 snack with multivitamin with iron
1200 lunch with multivitamin with iron ( I have to double up right now)
  200 snack with B complex
  500 dinner with liquid calcium
  700 night time meds

I have not idea what to do with your taking the calcium twice a day. We are so restricted with the iron, the calcium and the thyroid medication.  If possible I would switch the calcium.  I use the Wellesse Liquid calcium with vit D. Its an orangecream flavor and sells at walmart. I hope that kinda helps.

It will not work to take your calcium just once a day.  We need 1500-2000 mg calcium citrate a day and can only absorb about 500 mg at once, so we must take it three or four times a day.

Keep in mind that Wellesse is a combo of calcium citrate and tricalcium phosphate and we cannot absorb the tricalcium phosphate, so make sure you adjust your dose accordingly.

It's difficult to take in that much fluid in the first couple days but you've got to do it or you're setting yourself up for issues later on...

Start earlier in the day if you have to and take the entire day to get them in, but get them in.

Yes, count your protein shake as a fluid...if you drink it, it's a fluid.

Chicken broth is a fluid.

The 30-minute rule is only in effect once you begin to incorporate pureed foods in to your diet.

It's always better to be cautious...

I take most of my meds (metformin [first dose], Vitamins D, B-12, Flintstones Chewable Multi-vitamin [2] in the morning, crush my 1500 mg of Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D into two different cups and dissolve each one in my morning and afternoon 32 oz of Crystal Light) and then take my late afternoon/evening dose of metformin with dinner.

But, you know what works and doesn't work for you.

I would wish you 'Good Luck' but you don't need it...you can do this!

Watch your vitamin D lab results.  Likely you'll have levels of 30 to 40 if you are taking 5K or below of D3. If your labs are in this range, listen to my experence.  Don't rely on any doc putting you on script vitamin D, it won't work well with RNY post ops.  Take a dry D3 of 50K IU strenghty, 3-4 per week. Take for 1 to 2 months and retest.

In regards to hydration, you need more fluids than you have been taking.  Here is what I had to do with my wife after her hospitilization from dehydration 4 weeks post op.  Go to Amazon and get a snow cone making machine, around $30-31, with free shipping.  Take refrigerator ice cubes and grind them up into a bowl.  Add some SF Torani syrup of your choice for flavoring. Grind up some more ice cubes to fill the bowl, and add more of the same or different flavoring. Now you can eat your fluids and chew them in the form of ice shavings.  Even at 4 years post op, my wife has 2-3 of these snowcones daily to help her stay hydrated.  DAVE

Taking 800 mg calcium citrate twice a day won't work, since we can only absorb about 500 mg calcium at a time.  You need three or four doses of 500 mg a day.

Try something like this.

When you get up - syntrhoid

breakfast - multi, iron, B12, B complex

lunch - calcium, D3

dinner - calcium

mid-evening - calcium

bedtime - multi

Kelly,
I knew eventually you would come through.  I have looked into possibly changing to Celebrate Vitamins because they are made for bariatric patients and the vitamins have no iron and therefore I can take the calcium with it.  Not to mention the cost, if I buy a three month supply is about $26/month, which isn't bad.  Thanks for all your advice.

I sure thank you guys for all your wisdom!   I am so disappointed to say the least in the so called nutritionist that explained the vitamins and things to me. I will be adjusting my schedule now, and looking for a new calcium supplement.  Thank God I am learning all this before my surgery and not after when possibly sick.
