Getting enough protein versus balanced eating
At six months out, I know I should be getting 60-90 (leaning toward the 90) grams of protein in per day. However, recently I've begun to try to eat with some more variety in my diet, including fruits and veggies and I wonder if I am making my protein goals. The shakes are easy to calculate, but, for example, I made four bean turkey chili and have no idea how much protein that has. I feel like I should be just drinking shakes but that leaves me to room for the balance.
Does anyone else struggle with this and/or have a suggestion??? Thanks much!

Figure out how much protein is in the chili and see if you are meeting your protein goal. There is no reason to just be drinking shakes, unless that's what you prefer to do. Solid food will keep you full longer. As you get further out you'll have more room for fruits and veggies.
When you talk about balanced eating, keep in mind that what is "balanced" for an RNY person is not quite the same as what is balanced for someone else because our nutritional needs are different. We also take a LOT of vitamins so we do not need the fruits and veggies for the vitamins in them the way most people do, although they do still have other things we need, like fiber.

Thanks Kelly. I guess the hard part is doing the math and measuring to figure out how much protein is in my food when I make a dish as opposed to eating a turkey burger and can read the package. Yes, I realize I don't quite need to eat the same foods as when I used to "diet" but really like fruits and veggies! Maybe I'm just being impatient. :-)
Hope you are well!

I use myfitnesspal and you can enter in a recipe with all the ingredients you are making, say how many servings and it has and it will tell you the stats

I weigh everything I eat on a scale, and then look up the protein values.
I struggle with protein, and I am currently protein deficient. I was eating about 70, but that was not enough for me. If you're close to 60, you should keep a close eye on your labs. I am currently tracking at a minimum of 80, and trying to be at 100. That means that I eat protein all day, with only room for a couple of snacks that would be a quarter apple, or a little bit of mixed veggies (tomatoes and zucchinni work the best for me).

Well, I would think that the 4-bean turkey chili is providing plenty of protein in addition to the shakes. That seems like a protein-heavy entree...good for you!!
I'm also not sure that balance for us (RNY patients) is all that critical...meaning that if your diet was heavily unbalanced in favour of protein, it would not be at all problematic.

i disagree slightly. fruits and vegetables are very healthy for us and provide important micronutrients. yes we take vitamins, but it's not as good as the real source. (note: not saying don't take vitamins, just saying that veg and fruit in addition).
my plan focuses on balance. i eat fruit and/or veg at every meal. i think it's important for a healthy lifestyle.

I struggle with this some too. I do a pretty good job of getting in 70-80 grams of protein in a day, but sometimes not much else. Had some chicken the other day, with some veggies on the side, but by the time I got in enough chicken, I managed a bite or two of the veggies.
Your turkey chili with beans sounds like a protein powerhouse. To add a little more, sprinkle some reduced fat cheddar on top.
