Military Doctors... hmmm.. I can speak to this I was active duty for for 10 years and a dependent wife now.  :)

I have had ankle pains for over 8 years since I was active duty.  I finnaly got a doctor to listen to me, only after I told her that I had RNY and could not take NSAIDS.  She did an MRI and come to find out that I have been walking on a broken ankle, and a completely torn ligament for 8 years.

Military Doctors do not like to give out anything besides Motrin, I have gotten it for everything from ankle pain to allergies (seriously).

when I had my surgery Tricare had a RNY nurse that called to check up on me, I am not sure how to get a hold of her but I am sure the tricare hotline could help.  She maybe able to help you out.

How are you treating the disks and the kidney stones? Is your plan just to have narcotic for ever?

As robin's twin sister I know that she's not a drug seeker and also, being a military wife myself, I dont think it's right to stereotype "army wives" as drug seekers. There are tons of drug seekers out there from every walks of life. We aren't stationed near a base we I'm currently at and haven't had to deal with a military hospital for awhile but that will change this summer. I've also had gastric bypass and have chronic kidney stones and usually have at least one going through my body at all times. When the pain does get bad I don't have any problems with getting Vicodin for it. It only gets bad enough to take pain meds 2-3 times a year. When I was at base hospitals in the past and went to them for kidney stones they were jerks about it and would usually have to go to the er at another hospital. People who have these chronic problems should be able to get weight loss surgeries just like everyone else. Our surgeons must have agreed or they wouldn't have performed the surgery on us. I know what you are going through sis and hope the base hospital gets their heads out of their ass*s! You just have to stick up for yourself and don't listen to the negative people on here. You are on here for support not bashing! :)

There are alternative weight loss surgeries available for people who need to take NSAIDS on a long term basis.   These should have been considered by the surgeon who did you and your sister's surgeries as I assume they were aware of your long term health difficulties and their dislike of prescribing narcotics for ongoing health problems.

It was bad medical practice to give you both RNY when alternatives are available.

Umm who said we had to be on NSAIDs to treat our conditions? I've always been prescribed Vicodin for my kidney stone pain which is not an NSAID it has Tylenol in it not ibuprofen. I'd be just fine without taking another nsaid for the rest of my life. Last time I checked these weight loss surgeries are for people with poor health...

Wasn't the point of this thread that your sister is being prescribed NSAIDS for her ongoing medical conditions and can't get narcotics?

I'm thrilled that YOU are getting the narcotics you need, but your sister isn't and it's HER thread!!

No one thinks you or your sister shouldn't have had WLS, but just you should have had the one most appropriate for your medical histories of conditions that require long term pain relief ... I am assuming that you are both quite young, as you are both military wives, so unless you get appropriate relief for your conditions that are not being cured, you are going to require pain relief for what? 30, 40, 50 years? THAT's what needed to be considered!

I'm not beating up on you or your sister - no need to be defensive!

I see your point, Sin. Before surgery I wasn't having problems like I am now and didn't expect to. I've always had kidney stones but only got one about twice a year. Since I've lost 50lbs, my joints have started to hurt. Guess they were use to having that extra cushion. Also since surgery, I've been having kidney stones every couple weeks it seems. Dr thinks its the calcium I take and is having me stop it all together right now in case it's what's causing more stones. As for the new joint pain, my surgeon gave my Celebrex yesterday. Even though it's an NSAID, it's suppose to be the only one with less of a chance for ulcers. So I'm going to try it out and see what happens. I pray to god I don't get an ulcer. Thank u for your opinion..

Emilee, my plan isn't to have narcotic forever which I'm not even currently taken. I'm taking absolutely nothing and dealing with the pain. My "plan" is to fine something to help with the pain rather it be narcotic or not. Of course if there's something out there that's nonnarcotic and will help then I'd love to find out what it is. My pain had actually gotten much worse since have the surgery. Seems like the more weight I lose the more pain I'm in. I was told it should've worked the other way around. Maybe I don't have all that thick fat cushioning my bones anymore and that's why I'm in more pain? Not sure.

Thank you Gabby. That will be my next step. I literally have tons of bottles of Motrin giving to me for everything under the sun at the military hospital I go to. What good does it do if I can't take it?!! Helloooo Dr's!
Also thanks sis. I know you've been there..I just need to be stronger and stand up for myself.

Yes Sin a agree but it's a little too late to say should've and could've now. What's done is done and have to deal with the out come the best I can.
