Is my surgery working right?

My problem is that I dont know what I can and can not have. And the amounts I can have. I was given one sample menu for puree, one sample menu for soft and two sample menus for regular stage. So basically im eating the same things all the time, and when I venture out and try other things im not sure the measurements. I acidently measured my soup with the one cup size instead of the half cup size and I ate it all without feeling full. I feel like I need more guidance and more information on the foods I can and cant eat. I have a dietitian appointment booked last week but they cancelled it till the end of may. Im frustrated because I dont know if im doing the right things or not.

That is really poor aftercare.  Did you explain that you did not understand what you were supposed to be eating and needed to know before the end of May?  If they can't get you in before that, can't the dietician at least speak to you by phone and provide you with more written info?

In the meantime, perhaps you can try substituting similar items for the items on the menu you were given.  Like if the sample menu has two ounces of chicken and 1/4 cup of green beans, try two ounces of another meat and 1/4 cup of another veggie.

My NUT is available to me by phone and by email...I prefer to email her because I am not interupting her appts and when she answers, she may be able to give me more info in a quick email than on the phone....then I can read it at my leisure. If you cannot get her attention,I would consider connecting your surgeon and tell him you need some help.

i would like to give one other view of why people (INCLUDING ME) don't always follow the advice their doctor gives for how to eat..

for me, and possibly some others, it's just not that easy to do - i have found that i tend to eat for reasons other than physical hunger. this has been extremely difficult to change, and i'm seeking outside help for the issue.

i say this, and put myself up for embarrassment lol, because there are probably others out there who do the same things i do - and for similar reasons - and have a very hard time "just following the rules" so to speak..

it's not about willpower - i have none when it comes to this, apparently. at any rate, just wanted to throw that out there!

Oh, I know there are LOTS of reasons people might not always follow the advice of their doctors.  Some are even reasons I consider "good reason," like if a surgeon says to eat only three meals a day but you can't get enough protein in just three meals or if your blood sugar drops too low if you go that long without eating.

And I would guess a large number of people that have WLS eat for reasons other than physical hunger, and yes, it is very hard to change that.  I get that.  And I commend you for getting help with it.  I don't think you need to be embarrassed about it.  It's kind of like that's just part of learning to use your new tool so that it will work like it's supposed to.

You're right, it's not always as easy as "just following the rules," but for the most part, those rules are a good starting place.
