My surgeon told me today that after 3 months the occurrence of strictures diminishes and that by 5 months they are rare. This is incredibly good news for me (after 5 dilations) as I have just now reached 3 months. For those of you who may also suffer from strictures--take heart!

That's interesting. I had my second dialation yesterday and I am only 6 weeks post op. My doc said he would see me again because as I heal it will keep tightening up. I asked him how long it takes to heal and he said it can take scar tissue up to a year to settle down and stop causing strictures. I hope mine stops causing problems sooner than later.

 What are strictures?

It is a narrowing that can be caused by inflammation, scar tissue, wayward stitch, etc.  In bariatric pts it is usually dilated.  If it is caused by a stitch then that is trimmed.

Do they put you to sleep when they dilate it?  Sounds very uncomfortable.

Thanks!

They give you the same medicine as they did when you had your EGD prior to surgery. It's not complete sedation but it's enough that you don't feel anything and you aren't aware of what's going on. Then they insert a tool down your throat and through your stoma that has a balloon they inflate in the opening to enlarge the stricture. They have to be careful not to enlarge it to much at one procedure so that they don't have a perforation.

I was not awake but I don't know if that is always the case.
