My husband and I had a cat that lived for 18 years.  She got cancer at about the same time my husband did and spent most of her time sitting with him when he was weak from chemo.  She lived another three years after that, until the cancer finally became too much and we had to have her put to sleep.

My husband really wanted another cat.  I got one from a guy at work and we fell in love with her.  When I took her to the vet we were told she had feline AIDS.  We said we would take care of her for as long as she lived.  She only lasted a few months.

One day my husband said that there were cat tracks all over the truck that he parked in a carport.  I asked what he wanted to do about that and he said he wanted to buy catfood.  He fed the cat for months, but it would not come near us.  So I got him a female gray cat named Gracie from the shelter.

Then one freezing January day, the outside cat came to the door meowing.  I opened the door and the cat was covered with frozen blood.  Its fur had been ripped off and it had numerous long claw marks on it body.  I took it in the house.  It let me bathe him in warm water, I gave him food and water, and make him a bed on the back porch.  I put a heater out there so that he was warm and did not expect him to make it to morning.

The next day I took him to the vet.  It cost me about a thousand dollars to have him neutered, shots and care for his injuries.  I named him Danny and took him home.  A few years later, my husband's battle with cancer ended and I was a widow with only the two cats for company.  Both of the cats were my husbands and neither of them wanted anything to do with me after his death.
They would come in and eat and then stay outside.

It took a few months but they ended up accepting me.  They run the house and me.

I am sorry about your husband. I'm glad he was able to rescue and love on some kitties before his battle was over.
Cats are infamous for being the head honchos in a household! How does a 10-15lb animal get us to do their bidding so easily?   :)

I have a 15 yr old Jack Russell Terrier (terror) named Mystery.
I have had her since she was 6 wks old.
Poor old girl is having a time of it.
I think she is hard of hearing (or she has decided to start ignoring me)
She is blind in her left eye.
And lately is having a hard time keeping anything but kibble down.
I have an appt with her vet to see what is going on.
I'm just hoping it's not kidney failure or something serious.

Mystery is my only furbaby ... she is an alpha & won't let me bring another animal in.
Had a husky for about a week; until I came into the kitchen to find her hanging from the husky's throat trying to kill her.
She killed my baby duck.
Tried to kill my mom's dog. (Who was actually Mystery's sister from the same litter)
Just an all around mean @$$ dog lol but I love her.

Mystery sounds like she keeps you on your toes!!  Have you tried just putting her on unseasoned chicken and rice for a few days? My 14yr old Lab would have bouts of severe nausea and sometimes he needed meds, others he just needed a bland diet.  I hope things turn out ok for you guys!

That she does!

I have given her chicken & rice in the past - just not lately. I think I will make up some for her tonight.
Thanks for the reminder!

I am allergic to cats, and so was my father, so we have always had only dogs (although for a number of years I had zebra finches or a sal****er aquarium (the birds were cute and entertaining, and the fish we beautiful and calming, but we're not true pets).

I currently have two dogs.  Max is a 6 year old Scottie (my 4th in 25 years)... very smart, very lively, but he is also a "barker" which is unusual for the breed.  He loves to sit out in the backyard under a weeping cherry tree and watch the world -- he will sit out there literally for hours -- but he barks at all neighboring dogs, kids, and any person mowing their lawn (yet he is completely indifferent when I mow)!  He sleeps at the foot of the bed and will nap with me curled up partially on my thigh and partially on the arm of the chair or LaZBoy.

The other dog, Khan, is an almost 2 year old red shaded Chow Chow with severe hip dysplasia.  The breeder I bought him from takes pride in the temperament of their Chows, and -- atypical for the breed as a whole (we had several Chows when I was growing up) -- he is extremely affectionate.  He wags his beautiful fluffy tail any time I speak to him or touch him and he is ALWAYS ready to offer kisses.  Although he is 65 pounds and VERY fluffy, he thinks he is a lap dog and comes running when he hears me put the foot of the LaZBoy up; even with his bad hips, he comes up on my lap until he gets hot and then he lays between my feet (which I have to spread all the way off the sides of the chair in order to make room for him)!  Unfortunately, his hips make it difficult for him to get around (and he stands and sits as little as possible) and the pain makes him temperamental with other dogs, including Max.  I don't know how long it will be before I have to put him down either because he is too uncomfortable or because his temperament deteriorates.  He is so beautiful and loving that just thinking about it breaks my heart.

Max sounds like he just has his "big dog in a little dog body" attitude going on lol.

I remember reading about Khan and his hips  :( . I hope and pray for a long, peaceful time with him and that every moment is one to be cherished.
There is a beautiful cream colored Chow in Rio's training class. He is about as indifferent as they come .... very sweet, just not interested in anything but his mom and playing. He is beautiful... I want to snuggle my face in his fur but the owner warned me I would come up with a mouthful of doghair lol

Yes, Max definitely has a big dog attitude in that little 25-lb body.  I had to break up a fight this weekend, and Max accidentally bit me (one deep puncture from one of his lower canines that bled quite a bit and a huge lump from the opposite canine... the bruised area is easily the size of a baseball!)  This  is the third time I have been bitten when breaking up a fight and Max has always been the culprit.  He is always immediately very apologetic, but still...

I routinely nuzzle my face into Khan's wonderful, soft, fluffy ruff/mane (which is quite full), but it is unlikely that even a Chow puppy would allow a stranger to do so!  Yes, Chows are very aloof with everyone except family, and they take their guarding duties very seriously.  I knew, even before I got Khan, where the three places were that he would choose to sleep in order to properly guard me (based on the behavior of the Chows we had when I was growing up and the one my brother had for 13 years).

Terriers... can't live with them, can't live without them lol

Saturday at training I just buried my hand in the Chow's fur and it was so amazing.  I wouldn't challenge his instincts by crowding him though... even though it is so tempting!
