Acid reflex question

I have a question. I was planning on getting the by-pass but then found out my insurance covers the sleeve. So I was going to do that, but then I did an upper GI test to find I have mild to moderte acid reflex. So my doc doesn't think the sleeve would be a good idea because it can increase acid reflex. Have any of you have acid reflex before sugery and it's gone now? Or did you get it after sugery? Or maybe it stayed with you? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Hey thanks for the input. I hope your sugery went well. You have lost a ton of weight!!! Great job!!!
I'm not known for brevity, but I think I have a story worth listening to and I'll try to be short.
at 350+ pounds, I sometimes dreamed of getting thinner, but I was too fond of my best friend food to consider the idea of weight loss surgery. My sister urged me to look into it, in response to my telling her "I don't think my health insurance would pay for it," she got me to at least promise to find out if they covered it.
I joined OH and I read and learned and knew it could be covered. However I was very dubious that I was willing to alter up my anatomy just to lose weight. Then I read up on RNY and discovered that in a very high percentage of cases, GERD (acid reflux) was cured or curtailed. Suddenly my "leaning towards saying no to WLS" changed and I was totally enthralled.... because for me the weight was an issue but not big enough. However I had GERD and my ear, nose, and throat specialist had told me that my constant unremitting laryngitis was due to the GERD and damage done to my larynx. His advice was to stop teaching because ultimately I'd lose my voice entirely. No surgery would help because my GERD was due to being fat. NOT due to a defect in my stomach.
SO.... once I found out it was POSSIBLE that I could have my GERD cured... well I was willing to go through WLS.... losing weight.... nice bonus.... eliminating GERD.. MIRACLE. Further research showed that the BEST weight loss surgery for individuals with GERD is RNY. Lap band and VSG (and DS, whi*****ludes the VSG stomach) can result in an increase in GERD... even if ultimately the loss of weight results in a diminishment of the GERD overall... it can be much worse to begin with. So I got RNY first and foremost to eliminate my GERD. I haven't had issues since then.
Sadly for me, the damage to my larynx is more permanent than originally noted, and so I still have chronic laryngitis and lose my voice pretty much daily.
But in your situation, I'd choose RNY over all other weight loss surgery options.

Thank you so much for sharing. It helps out alot to hear or read it from somene who has gone threw it. I'm happy for you that you lost all of the weight and your Gerd. I know Gerd is a pain and I hate taking meds for it. My doc thinks the RNY would be the best for me as well. Sorry you have laryngitis, I do wish the best for you. I have a lot of trouble losing my voice or it going to different sound levels. Thanks so much for the advice.

I agree with the other posters! I had the band and had nothing but problems with acid reflux, which led to a huge dilation of my esophagus and other issues. When I found out I needed the band removed, I asked for the sleeve but my doc said it's restrictive, and restrictive procedures won't do anything to help the GERD. She also said RNY generally "cures" GERD, so I got over my fears and had surgery Tuesday. I know I haven't had anything but liquids yet, but i haven't had any issues with reflux since the surgery and I was one who could have horrible pain just from drinking water before lying down before this procedure.
