Do I Stink?

I may be totally off base here, but I wonder if any of you have the same experience.

It seems like my body, particularly under my arms, is emitting a sort of chemically-based odor. By the end of the day, I don't think I smell so hot and my laundry is piling up much more quickly. I am particularly sensitive to smells, so not smelling like a rose is really yucky to me. Wah!

What do you think--are you smelling not so sweet too?

Well, I can't smell you from here, so it's hard to say.

It may be due to ketosis - burning lots of fat.  Many people develop really bad breath when they are in ketosis but it might affect sweat, too.

I take it deodorant isn't really helping?

No, deodorant isn't helping. I thought maybe since my body has changed that I might be having some sort of reaction to the deodorant I have always used, but I dunno. I don't like feeling like I smell bad at the end of the day!

You could try another brand of deodorant.

Chances are, once you get a bit further out and add more carbs to your diet, the problem will go away.  Until then, I realize this could be a big annoyance, but you could try to squeeze in a quick after dinner shower, or even just a quick sponge bath of the armpits and any other areas that need freshened up.  Maybe applying deodorant more often than once a day would help, too.

I haven't had that problem that I know of or that anyone has told me.

It does seem, as Kelly suggested, that it could be deu to ketosis. I had a coworker many years ago that had an unspecified medical problem. He always slightly odd, kind of a chemical odor.  He said he had some success with Mitchum deodorant. Why that one, I don't know.

I had another coworker who just sweated excessively, and she had good luck with the 'clinical strength' deodorants.

I wonder too if this is something only you are noticing (which doesn't make it any less of a problem, I know). I have a nose like a bloodhound since surgery, which has its drawbacks.

LOL, I have always had a keen sense of smell and since surgery it has become ridiculously sensitive!  :)

I don't seem to sweat excessively, but I will check out a couple of other deodorants and see if it helps.

My husband hasn't complained about any unpleasant odors wafting from me, but then again, he IS a gentleman.  :)

I just had to change deodorants. The one I'd used for about a year just wasn't cutting it anymore. Maybe my body just got used to it and it wasn't effective anymore.

I remember this happened to me for the first few months after surgery, when I was loosing a lot of weight.  My sweat and urine were really concentrated and smelled a little.  It only lasted for a few months.  Once the weight loss slowed down it seemed to go away.  I bought the clinical strength deordorant and this seemed to help a little.

OMGosh! Did I ever stink! I got my RNY on 6-24-11 and boy as I stinky. I never had a problem with excessive sweating or body odor until surgery. I had to get a different deodorant/antiperspirant. It did go away after a few months.

Thank you for posting this...I too have been smelling myself and it is really been bothering me. I have asked my husband if he can smell my stench and he said no. I have a very strong sense of smell after my RNY also. As for bathing and showering, I have been living in the shower! lol Twice a day and reapplying deodorant to no avail...I am just glad that I am not the only one! lol
