Ulcers after Gastric Bypass

Hello,

I had my RNY surgery on April 28, 2011, and have reached and surpassed my goal since Decmeber 2011.  Everything has gone very smoothly and I have had no problems until recently.  I ended up in Emergency due to pain just under my ribcage and on my right side.  The pain has never gone away it is just less intense.   The doctors there told me it was my gallbladder even though there was no inflamation and my white blood cell count was fine.

I went to see my Gastric by pass Surgeon today, and he informed me that is most likely not my gallbladder, but an ulcer - I go for a scope soon to see where it is and if that is what this constant pain is.

Has anyone else developed an ulcer after surgery?  What am I looking at regarding recovery, issues etc?  Just trying to get informed.

Thanks for any feedback!!

Sorry about the ulcer :(

This February I passed out in the middle of the night at home and was taken to the ER I was terrified because I have had multiple complications from my RNY including 5 ventral/incisional hernias that have all been surgically repaired , and lap choley. The most recent hernia was in January and when I went to surgery it was discovered that I also had about 2 feet of small intestine tangled up around my stomach.

So once in the hospital it was discovered that I had two large old ulcers at the anastamosis site of my pouch and small intestine that had resulted in acute GI bleed and my hemoglobin level was critical at 6.0 I received blood and iron transfusions and was sent home on carafate, iron and protonix to take pretty much the rest of my life.

I feel fine now, but I know as past experence has taught me, it could happen again at any time so it is ALWAYS in the back of my mind.

I am 4 1/2 years post RNY I don't regret it but I have suffered the consequences of the decision.

Just thought I would share my story,
Best wishes to you!

I had my RNY in October .. In December they found 4 ulcers. They really suck. Thankfully carafate cured them. Now, it's my Gallbladder :( I hope you are feeling better really soon!

Well if you get the black craps it is 100% an ulcer!

As for recovery really isn't any.  a PPI and carafate will help the ulcer heal. As for the procedure, it will be the best 15-30 minutes of sleep in your life.
