Laura I could swear my Dr said he didn't but my friend used him and he did and I asked his nurse and she said yes he routinely does. Ugh hey if that is the least of my worries I think I am doing ok.

Hollie I personally think that it is because some Drs are cruel cruel people! Just kidding I don't know why some do and some don't.

RNY on 04/06/12
Long ago, when I had a hysterectomy, the surgeon yanked out the drain without warning. It hurt. I cried.

When I had my gall bladder out, I don't remember the drain removal. It must not have been too bad.

After the RNY, my drain was clogged and the nurse stripped it to work the clot out. Holy crow. That hurt like a sum***** I yelled a lot. She came back to do it again and I very nearly refused. I would rather have died of clotted body fluid than ever feel that again. But she did it. I yelled some more. When she said she'd be back to check on me later, I told her I didn't think I was letting in my room any more.
Then the surgeon came to remove the drain and I was all set to go through hell again. She told me I would be pleasantly surprised how little it hurt to pull the tubing out; it was stripping it that hurt because it created suction.
I got all mentally prepared, she pulled, I hollered "Floo!" and felt dumb because it was over and she was absolutely right: it felt funny and uncomfortable for two seconds, and that was all. No big deal.

At home I soaked the dressing two or three times; then the drainage stopped.

I've had 3 c-sections, a RNY and a gallbladder removal..the only time I had a drain was after my 3rd c-section. She only did this because my wound split open about 10 days after my 2nd c-section so she wanted to be cautious. I asked my RNY surgeon about drains and she said she rarely used them..I'm not sure what her 'criteria' was for using it but I didn't have one.
