I have not used a straw since  surgery.  I oten have pretty bad bouts with gas so I thought there was no need to make things any worse.

If you have a medicine cup or something that measures one ounce, then measure out one ounce of water and feel how that amount feels in your mouth.  Try that several times so you just kind of known what that amount feels like. Then when you are drinking with a straw, you can limit yourself to a 1 ounce amount to swallow.   You shouldn't have any problems if you stick to just drinking one ounce at a time and then letting it settle before you drink your next ounce.

My surgeon's NUT said we could use straws.  I use them without any issues.  I don't bloat or get gassy.  It does help get the shake down.

Thank you for asking this question!  I was also told to avoid straws and I really believe it has prevented me from drinking enough protein and liquids.  I don't know why a straw makes it easier, but it does.  I'm going to get a straw right now!  :)

That is precisely the reason that many people DO use straws.  My surgeon's guidelines were no straws just for a short period of time (sorry, it's been 5 years, so I don't remember exactly how long) and then they were ok.  I never would have come close to getting in my fluids without straws early out.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

If you have the closed cap cup or bottle with the spout it helps as well the first few weeks out. I used a water bottle that had the little spout on top as well.   It keeps one from smelling the drink if you are sensitive to the smell while drinking.  The extreme sensitivity to smell stopped for me at about 10 wks post op.

I can't speak to why drinking through straws might not be advisable for women, but, as a man, I know that straws are not an option because wer're men, dammit...as I said to Capt. Kirk in another thread, straws are for women who drink dacquiris...
