So eveyone is aware that bed bugs have made a comeback. There are numerous reasons for their resurgence, one being the ban on pesticides that they used in the past (I think it's DDT). Anyhow, these are articles that will help folks who choose to buy thrift store clothing to stay safe.

Since many of us are losing and are between sizes, I understand why many find it a waste to buy new clothing. I think I'm going to take my chances with buying really inexpensive new clothes from Walmart or clearance items from other stores. I just cant risk an infestation. Anyway, here's the link to the articles.

I love the thrift store but the bed bug issue has crossed my mind I know they are really bad lately. I have avoided buying any fabric items. My parents have bed bugs in one of their rental houses and they can not get rid of them despite having the exterminator out several times.

I always wash clothes from the thrift store as soon as I get them home.  They come out of the plastic bag and go right into the washer.

Maybe I misunderstand your post, but what does working with the mentally ill have to do with bed bugs being a big problem?  Are you saying bed bugs are more of a problem for the mentally ill, and if so, why would that be?

I'm sure she'll come back and explain. But I'm wondering if she means that she works in an "institution". Some folks that live in shelters and varioius other institutions where there is intake and  discharge may be at more risks for any number of illnesses and other things. Particularly if they are homeless.

That would make sense.

Yes it is possible to get bed bugs from new clothing, but one is even more at risk from used or thrift clothing based on the number of cases reported by folks who shop at thrift stores. Haven't heard any yet from folks who buy new clothing. But it is possible.

I wish you had been more clear with your statement.

Being mentally ill does not equal having bed bugs.

Situations where many people live in one place, like an institution or group home, or lower income housing may also be a risk factor. All of those criteria can affect people who are not mentally ill as well as the general population

1 out of 5 people suffer from a mental illness. Not all of them have bedbugs.

Yeah, I'm mentally ill and I've never had bed bugs.
