Anyone not sleeping better after CPAP machine?

I keep reading that people sleep better and it is great. My dang machine has made me tired and I have noticed a increase in my allergies.

I go into my room at 9pm and put the machine on while I watch tv and fall asleep. I force myself to sleep at 10pm. I wake up at 3am for work so I get at least 5 hours of sleep they asked me to do 4. I go to work and I am back home in bed by 530am and sleep until 8....will sleep later when the kids are out of school on Thursday YAY!!! So before I used the CPAP machine I used to be able to come home from work at 530 and stay up and make breakfast for the kids and get a start to my day. I can't do that anymore hubby gets them fed and dressed and ready to go out the door to school.

Do you think my settings could be wrong? Also I noticed my allergies kicking in big time. I woke up last night at 2am having a sneezing fit eyes tearing and it is 945am and I am still sneezing and tearing up. This happened the past 2 weeks. Could something have gotten into the machine? I use distilled water clean it out 2x a week and I have the nasal thing that has 2 little nose spots not the full on mask.

Thanks

Michelle

I sleep well with mine. I do not humidify the air and do well. How often are you changing the small filter? You might change that out more frequently since you are using distilled water.

I have an APAP and I love it. I think I get a better sleep and feel more rested when I get up. I go to bed at about 11PM and sleep until about 4AM and then go into the media room and sit in my big easy chair. I have back trouble and can not sleep laying down that long. I sometimes take the APAP with me, but most times I just doze a little so I don't think I need it there. I use the full mask model as I am a mouth breather and the nose type gags me when I open my mouth.

As I understand it the APAP type automaticly adjusts to the amount of air you need at any one time. Mine has a modem on it and transmits data to my doctor and they evaluate how well it is working for me and the number of what they call saves. The doctor says I am making very good progress and have dropped from a level 9 to a level 3. I do not know what that means, but he feels there is a good chance that when I am at goal I will not need it anymore. I will have to go through another night long test. I really enjoy the machine and think it does a great job for me. Years ago I had a regular CPAP and hated it, and took it back, but this new one is great.

I used my BIPAP the night before last and woke up tired as could be.  I didn't use it
last night and today I'm fine.  Go figure.  However, I'm going to keep using it because my
apnea is very severe and I'm afraid of dying in my sleep.

I've been slacking on using my CPAP since I had my surgery but I used it daily before my surgery and slept fine.

How long have you been using it?  Sadly it doesn't give you energy over night.  It takes a bit for your body to adjust to not being woken up several times a night.  So, you aren't going to see a big difference in the first few weeks.  The one thing I notice big time is that in the past I'd get home at 4:30 (I'm up at 5 AM go to bed around 10:30) and I would not be tired or feel the need to lay in bed and take a afternoon nap.  I might be tired from the day but not ready to go to bed.

It is allergy season do you take an allergy meds? I know I have to take my zyrtec religiously right now with all the Cotton wood blooming in Washington.  Do you have a humidifier on your Cpap? Maybe turn it up?

Good luck!

I do have a humidifier I will crank that up! I did take allergy meds today late as I see from this agony? I have had my machine maybe 2 months. I think I a, going to call the dr because I never felt the need for naps and I have noticed I do take a nap somedays in the middle of the afternoon. Thanks for your replies.

i slept worse with it. i couldn't get comfortable and woke up a lot with it on. my apnea is/was (haven't gotten retested since before pre-op) really mild and i was on the lowest setting so the doctor didn't have a huge issue with me not using it, they didn't even make me use it when i stayed in the hospital for surgery.

I was put on the cpap after my sleep study before surgery, hated it from the get go, never go used to it and had a hard time sleeping, would wear it just for the required hours and then take it off, took it to the hospital with me for my surgery and no one ever asked me about it and I never wore it the whole time I was in the hospital, and never wore it again.  I sleep fine now!

I got mine years ago and it has quite a thick layer of dust on it. Meaning I stopped using it after a couple of months of trying. I woke up tired and cranky from waking up constantly from getting tangled, strangled with the hose. pulling out the hose from the machine when I moved too far in the bed. choking from opening my mouth, or waking up with Jaw and teeth aching from gritting my mouth closed. mask slipping and blowing air in my eyes. Feeling like I was being suffocated with something on my face. Feeling like I had a face hugger from Alien attacking me. Bad dreams, interrupted sleep, never dreaming. Finding the mask ripped from my face and lying on the bed next to me or thrown over the top of the head board. I had the kind that covers the nose completly, I tried and tried to get used to it and never could. I finally stopped wearing it so I could sleep. I also had to jack the tv up so loud to get past the noise of the machine so I could fall asleep normally. (I fall asleep to tv). that was 13 years ago.

I have to get a new sleep study this month (I know I have it) and I will be getting new equipment. I am hoping that trying a new mask (unkown what kind to choose) will be what I need.

It takes a while (sometimes months) to get used to it but most people eventually do. I never noticed feeling better with it, but once I got used to it, I could definitely tell when I didn't use it!

Try upping the humidifier setting so maybe it doesn't irritate the inside of your nose so much. The irritation of the inside of the nose makes it more sensitive to allergens and can dry it out. Use saline nasal spray when you wake in the morning and during the day to keep moist and rinse out allergens.

I would say you definitely have not been using it long enough to get used to it or to notice much of a positive difference. Keep trying!
