Quiz - How Well Do You Know Your Pouch?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
The pyloric valve is just that, a valve in your pyloris that holds food long enough for the digestive process to start. Since we do not have one our gastric emptying is accelerated and food hits the bowels in a more whole state. One thing this can cause in a certain percentage of people is dumping. It also causes alcohol to absorb much more quickly.
Why are we advised not to drink with meals or right after meals?
Drinking pushes the food out of the stoma and into the bowel much more quickly than if you were to not drink. This increases the chance that you will be hungry more often, and gives you the room and opportunity to consume increased calories.
If you take a vitamin and then drink right away, will that wash the vitamin about of the pouch and keep you from absorbing it?
WIll it wash you, possibly. It depends on the size of the pill, how quickly it dissolves and how much food is still left in the pouch. Does it matter? No, we do not absorb through our stomach anyway. We absorb in the bowel.
Can soda or other carbonated drinks stretch your pouch?
There's no evidence that drinking soda will permanently stretch your pouch. It can temporarily distend it, but so can a meal. It can also increase gas.
Will drinking too much water all at once stretch your pouch?
Again, it can temporarily distend your pouch if guzzled quickly in large amounts but the liquid goes straight through.
How can NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin and Aleve) hurt your pouch? What if you take them by injection or IV so they don’t actually come in contact with your pouch?
NSAIDS act systemically on the stomach lining by thinning the protective mucosal layer. It makes no difference if it's oral, injectable or even topical. The mechanism of action for the drug is the same by any route. They increase your risk of ulcers in both your pouch and your blind stomach.
Before RNY, you had a pyloric valve and now you don't (at least not a functioning one). What is that and what affect does not having one have on you?
Why are we advised not to drink with meals or right after meals? We do not want to wash the food out of our pouch too soon or we will get hungry quicker
