Poll re: vitamins and labs

What I'm wondering about is if patients that take chewable multis are less likely to develop deficiencies than those that use multis they swallow.

Which do you use a chewable multi or one you swallow?  Or something else (liquid, ENS)?

While using that multi, have developed any vitamin or mineral deficiencies?  How is your thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin K, zinc, copper and B6, for instance?

Also, has anyone switched from one form of multi to another, like going from a chewable to one you swallow, and then noticed a big change in your labs?

I use a multi that I swallow and have for , oh, about a year and a half I guess.  I think my vitamin A level did drop a bit when I switched (I was using ENS before) but I think that may have more to do with the fact that my multi now has slightly less vitamin A in it than the ENS did rather than the fact that it's a different form.  But maybe not.  I'd personally rather have to take extra vitamin A a couple times a week (I take 25,00 IU three times a week) than eat chewable vitamins.

I use chewable D3, iron and multi.  Have since surgery.  Calcium, B complex, and C are swallow.

The only deficiency I've had is D3, but I wasn't taking extra D3 until I noticed it dropped.  All other levels are good.

I would expect anyone that was not taking extra D3 to be low on vitamin D.

I'm OK on D3 with what comes in my multi, calcium, and being outside in the summer.  It seems all my supplements (even fish oil) come with D3 these days.

Yeah-duh.

The only issue is that I WAS TAKING EXACTLY WHAT MY DOCTOR TOLD ME TO.....and I learned the hard way that HE ISN'T A VITAMIN EXPERT, he's an expert SURGEON.

Heck, I've learned all I know about vits from you Kelly!

Of course, the lab also said that D3 of 30 was ok....because 30 was the minimum on the range....you taught me 80 should be minimum, so I'm slowly getting there....was 30 in November, 45 in May, and hope to be at 80 by November.  I'm taking 5,000 iu D3 daily (in addition to my D3 with my calcium (750 iu) and whatever is in my multi).

By the way, should I up that????

I don't know if you should up that or not.  Sometimes when I'm not sure, I kind of compromise.  Like, in your situation, I might add a second D3 a couple times a week.

Kelly - how soon after surgery should labs be done? I asked if they'd be done at my 6-week follow up, but was told vitamins wouldn't be checked until 3-6 months post surgery...

Most surgeons seem to do them at three months post op, then six months, nine months, and then one year.  After that, many only do them once a year, while some do them every six months.  I get mine done every six months because I just think things could change far too much in a whole year.

I think waiting until three months post op is OK.  Unless you had deficiencies pre op, it's unlikely anything would drop significantly in just six weeks.  Of course, if you have any symptoms of deficiencies, you should get that checked sooner.
