ALL RIGHT... It was subtle but the consensus seems to be... (drum roll...) not going to happen.  :)  But I must admit having such clarity really was helpful.

I just finished 20 mins on the treadmill and it felt so good.  I'm SO ready to launch!!!!!  I guess this time tomorrow I might feel a touch differently?!?

Thanks everyone for your feedback.  New target... Halloween 5k!!!

I walked regularly right up until my surgery and it was still like starting all over again after surgery. Certainly the day after it was all I could do to walk several laps around the unit at the hospital. The day I came home from surgery I was wiped out after a short, slow walk around the block. It took me a few weeks to even pick up my pace to something resembling normal.

Kudos to you, though, for your motivation! Likely your surgeon will not allow you to do more than walk for the first 6 weeks. After that, feel free to start the C25K training. But don't fret if you're still not up to it at that point. Just stay moving and you'll get to where you want to be before you know it!

I had my surgery a week ago and today is the first day I feel halfway close to normal. I have been in way to much pain to do much walking. I have taken my dog out for short walks but those walks leave me sweating and feeling sick. I still hurt if I move certain ways and feel like every suture is ripping out of my body. UGHHHH

Not gonna happen.

Most of us are in the hospital 2 to 3 days after surgery. Very few of us are able to go home the day after the surgery (I was, but I'm in the minority). Even if you did go home the day after surgery, you are NOT going to feel like moving much less trying to train for a 5k. Typically for the first 6 to 8 weeks it's walking only. And for the first few days a trip of a block or so is taxing. You'll have to work up to the point your wanting to be at.

Best of luck with your surgery!

You are having major surgery! There is no way to prepare how your body will do.  You can read until the cows come home, but you need to be ready for some unpleasant side effects from the surgery.  Doesn't mean you will have any, but it will be normal if you did. Things like nausea, projectile diarrhea where you may not make it to the toilet. I am sure you don't want to be running and then have a messy episode.  I am not trying to defeat your optimism, but let's be realistic about recovery.  Take care of yourself.  Jane

Update:  My surgery was yesterday and it went really well.  I wasn't able to walk yesterday due to some confusion with the nursing staff.  But today I walked four seperate times and the final time... I walked for 20 minutes!!!  Felt SO GOOD!!!  I'm not expecting to run my first 5k and the C25K program I've selected is focused on simply finishing the race.  So folks... I might just be able to do my first 5k eight weeks from now!  WOOHOO!!!

SO... I had my surgery on Tuesday and on Wednesday I was able to breathe in my air test tube beyond the surgeon's goal, 2) I was a rock star when it came to coughing and getting my lungs working, and 3) (BEST OF ALL) I walked not the three times recommended but I walked FOUR times and the final walk was an inadvertent 20 minute walk!!!  WOW... I felt so good.  So ready to take on the world.  So excited about my new life.  (And certain everyone was wrong about staying on track for my 5K)...

Then came Thursday.
Then came Friday.

Turns out Wednesday I was experiencing a touch of post-surgery anesthesia euphoria?!?

Since Thursday I have no interest in eating, not even my favorite ice chips.  Blowing on the air test tube... so hard.  Simply walking the short hallway of my building feels ambitious. Weighed when I was leaving the hospital… I was UP 12 lbs from my check in day at the hospital. Discouragement has been abundant and lurking at every corner.

Thankfully though I'm still encouraged.  I'm sticking with it.  I'm investing the time.  Doing my walks.  Doing my breathing.  Taking my vitamins.  Trying to get the protein shake down.  (yuck!)
But most importantly I am actively appreciating the feedback you provided on Monday. Without it, I would be beyond frustrated/disappointed in my status. So thank you for helping to keep me on track and manage my expectations wisely.

So glad you checked in! Congrats on the surgery, and it WILL get better. Don't over do it, keep up with the fluids. I hope you feel better soon!
