when did you stop seeing your surgeon?
I saw my surgeon until I was about two years out. Now I do my follow up with my PCP.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I am 5 years out and still see her yearly. Since she is closing her practice, though, I guess my PCP will handle things from here on out (he does supplemental abs, if desired/needed, anyway). I would stay with your surgeon until you are done losing and in maintenance... But that's just my personal opinion.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I am going to see mine as long as I can ......... he is just dreamy!
I actually was wondering the same thing since my PCP could do the labs just as well but want to maintain a relationship with the surgeon just in case I need something else done down the line.
Or until he leaves his wife and children for me........ then I will see him daily. Delusional.......who me?

I've not been since I was 5 months out (when I moved from the US to Singapore). I have educated myself and all my PCPs regarding my testing and levels. I suspect I am more up to date on my needs than most bariatric surgeons (Flinstones anyone?)
I have a haemotologist because I had pre-existing auto immune blood disorders.
If I had a problem with my digestive system that required surgery, I would contact a local bariatric surgeon but otherwise ... not really much need for one so far!

yes i pretty much agree with what was said..but in my case...i had my 6 month blood work done...my vitamin D was 37, was told by my base PCM, i was fine.. was told by my surgeon i was fine....my B-12 was 350 something...was told by my base PCM, i was fine. was told by my surgeon, i was fine....i did my own stduy, went to my chiro with blood work in hand and he agreed with me that both were low and he liked what i had started..i was having tingling in my little pinki finger and right little toe...and in fact some numbness...but the other drs said i was fine...i now have a new base PCM and when he looked at my 1 year labs, and my 6 month labs, he agreed with me and my chiro that i was low and that now my B-12 of 1061 was a bit high..but i am going to keep doing what i am doing.. my chiro said i should just keep doing what i am doing..so that is what i am going to do...i just dont totally feel like making the drive and such to be told "everythings fine" when 6 months ago it wasnt...my insurance gave me a choice of 1 of 2 drs to have mu sugery..im blessed i got to have the surgery..but both of them were over an hour away and just dont "see the need" to go every 6 months when i have no problems at all....if i was having pains and such, i would be there in a heart beat....thanks for all your input..

I am fresh out of surgery (1 month tomorrow) and it's a haul for me to drive to my surgeon. 2.5 hours. My hubby thought once the surgery was done I could just continue going to our PCP. I had to tell him that no for the first year i have checkups at certain times and we about got divorced over me having to go to the nutritionist next week. I know there are nutritionist here locally but they don't know my doctor's plan. Plus an official weigh-in. I also am afraid if I don't follow up as they require and I do have an issue that my insurance company may refuse to pay because I wasn't compliant with what was required when I had surgery. Just a thought. Hope that helps! Sherry
I'm 6-1/2 years out and after the multiple apps during the first two years I have continued to go once a year. I feel it helps me keep in the right mindset to remember where I was, where I am, where I need to go. It helps me keep on track with doing what I need to do to remain healthy as a post-op.
Follow up probably doesn't have to be yearly for everyone, but every couple would be a good idea for everyone to have the surgeons prospective.
Have a good night!
