Kelly, couldn't have said that better myself. I agree, you have to read the report carefully to understand the info. Never understood till i experienced it myself why people react so emotionally to to the subject of WLS. So quick to find the negative.

My mother has now made it her job to find any negative article or report to discredit the prodedure and results. Considering blocking her.  Kinda late for that, Ma! Oiy!

Poet_kelly, I do appreciate the direct manner in which my assertions are challenged.

In order to answer your question(s) candidly, what I find objectionable is the conclusion reached as per the headline and seemingly applied to the entire RNY segment of the WLS community.

The headline,

'Gastric bypass for weight loss increases alcohol use, study says'

Weight at Heaviest: 320 lbs.
Weight at Surgery:
283.6 lbs.

Ah.  I didn't even pay attention to the headline but I agree with you, it is objectionable.  And not accurate.  The study did not find that people use more alcohol after RNY, I don't think it even measured how many drinks a day people had or whatever before and after RNY, did it?  The study said some people developed an alcohol addiction after RNY.  Which is not the same thing that the study said.

I do think it's important to keep in mind that the people doing the study didn't write that headine.  That was a journalist trying to make something sensational out of something that wasn't a very big deal.  And, IMO, doing it in an irresponsible way, because the headline claimes the study said something it did not really say.

Hmmm...did we read the same article???  I didn't find it anti wls at all and I thought that it was factual.  The point that our permanently altered digestive system processes alcohol is important to note and it was wise that they compared the group to band patients, who have not had their digestive systems changed in the same way.

I think its a really good article and gives people a pause for thought.

I guess it's more the headline than the article, while factual, yes, it is selectively so...see ****rogirl's response...
