surgeons discouraging patients from seeking support/information

There are doctors that feel that the paitent should get all their informtaion from them and what they don't tell them...they don't need to know.  It is a paternalistict view of things and in this day and age of health care with paitents pushed throguh the clinics and hospitals quickly to allow the doctor to see the maximum number per day humanly possible (bottom line is $$).....the view is teribbly ourdated.

It may have worked in the 1950's when there was a family doctor treating entire generations of families and knowing the paitent inside and out....and them actually spending time with the family....not so much any more.  We must take charge of our heath care whi*****ludes educating ourselves.

I agree with Lori.  Although my surgeon warned against putting blind trust in ANY information from the Internet, she never discouraged people from coming to places like OH to get occasional questions answered or for support.  She did provide a binder with pretty much all the information we needed for th first few months.

For me having a surgeon tell me not to seek out any information elsewhere would be a big enough red flag that I would have to ask him/her WHY, and, unless I received a satisfactory explanation, would be reason enough for me to seek out a different surgeon. IMO, that is a surgeon that wants patients placing blind trust in him/her and does not want anyone challenging him/her on any questionable advice.  It protects the surgeon, but places the patient at the mercy of the quality/accuracy of the information from the surgeon.

My thoughts are..... that is such bologna!!!!!

I have learned soooooo much info from this site. Im sorry but my surgeon is a fantastic surgeon that is what he does, but there is so much he doesnt know about once you've gotten on the other side of that hump!!!

I thank each and every person here that has been such a wealth of information to me, and Kelly you and a couple others are at the top of that list!!!
