Hi... this may seem silly but I'm new to RNY, my surgery is set for july 25th and I have never been so happy.  :)
My question is, are protein drinks the stuff that has whey in it?  I was looking at a soybased powder form from Herbalife, and I'm not sure if it will be too sweet, only 2g of sugar but tastes like a whole lot more.
Can someone give me some info about the different proteins.. thanks

There are soy-based protein shakes, and egg-based ones, and milk (whey) based ones.

Whey protein isolate is considered one of the best most bioavailable types, and that is what I used for my losing stage. Nectar Syntrax, 0 g of fat, 0 g of sugar, 23.5 g of protein, 90 calories if added to water. I added to water, with a crystal light, in a bottle with a flip top so I wouldn't have to SMELL it while drinking (lousy smell, taste not so bad when you cant' smell it)

Now that I'm in maintenance, I use a Whey Protein Concentrate (a little less pure protein) it's 110 calories, 1.5 g of sugar, 1.5 g of fat, and 23.5 grams of protein, cheaper, milder taste, I mix it with water and crystal light and still drink it  out of a flip top bottle.

Protein drinks are drinks that are high in protein.  They  might have whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, egg white protein, calcium caseinate, etc.

Hi! Not a silly question at all! We're all here to learn and help each other out! Protein comes in different forms. Soy, whey, rice, egg, etc. The most popular is whey and soy. What are the stats on the protein? Calories, protein? The one I use is 24grams protein and 120 calories.

Not a silly question at all. I am fairly new to the protein drinks, RNY surgery was 2 weeks ago but, I think I have mastered getting my protein. Walmart has a New Whey Protein shot, 3.9 oz that has a total of 42grams of protein. I was interested in getting the most amount of protein in the least amount of liquid. I do not like the taste of ANY protein supplements so here is what I do to get the protein I need.
I take 4 16 ounce water bottles and mix Special K Protein Mix in each (1 packet/1bottle) that is a total of 64 ounces of water with 20 grams of protein. Then I take 1 New Whey protein shot (3.9 ounce)  and divide that into approx. 1 ounce each into the 4 water bottles. For a total of 62grams of protein and 64 ounces of water for the day. I don't taste the sweetness of the protein that way. It is still a challenge for me to get all the fluid in but it is possible.
Hope that helps!

I bought the Whey Isolate shots at Walmart too.   $14 for six tubes of Fruit Punch......they taste HORRIBLE!!!   I just poured one over ice and took one drink and thought I was gonna hurl.  My husband told me to hold my nose and I did get to finish the 3.9 oz.  But for the rest of the afternoon, any time I opened my mouth to drink or eat I could smell it.  Ugghh!  I'vb got 5 more tubes to gag down.  Maybe if I dilute them like you did it will taste better.  Its not just whey isolate, it has Collagen protein isolate, Whey, and Casein protein isolate.  Definately quick and loaded with protein with no sugar, but NASTY!!!

The collagen ones are useless to your body because they do not have all the amino acids necessary to absorb the protein (and collagen is a crappy quality protein to begin with).   Don't torture yourself OR waste your money for nothing.

See my other response. You cannot absorb the collagen protein in the shots!

The best protein for you will be the Whey Isolate protein. The whey concenctrate form does not lave the lactose filtered out of it.  Soy protein will work too, but generally the protein content per shake is less than that of whey isoalte.  My support groups had Herbalife presented for review. Too high a sugar content compared to many brands available.  ONLY you can tell whether you think any protein shake is too sweet, too gritty, too sour, etc. Your tastebuds generally undergo a transitition post op, when your favorite flavors are now the opposite.  If you tend to be sensitive to milk products, the whey isolate may be fine for you.  There are unflavored whey isolate proteins available too.  My profile page has a photo of one generic form, that mixes easily with water or milk, has no flavors, is not gritty, etc.  At 6 years post op I still use this protein in oatmeal or other foods, and mix it in FF pudding at times too.  I was a little curious why you preferred soy?  I was thinking of the soy because it tastes better when you mix it with one of the other protein produts they have.  I have a container of whey vanilla and just opening the cover makes me wan to hurl whatever i have eated.  So i'm trying so hard to avoid whey, esp. when i have to drink a lot of them pre-op and post-op.  I have a meeting with my NUT on Tuesday, I'm sure she can help me figure out something that I can manage.  THanks for your input  Juilie
