Energy Level

I had RNY on 6/12 and felt good for the first week then lost all my energy. Lab showed slight anemia and low potassium which was treated with a B-12 injection and potassium prescription. While still in the hospital I had an iron transfusion so my iron shouldn't be that low should it? I am getting between 60-80 gm of protein and my water in (but on average eating about 400 cal. a day). What can I do to help my energy level? Should I still feel this tired 3 weeks post-op? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'll let someone else answer the iron question (personally I would think it could be low).
As far as exhaustion - despite the tiny incisions (if it was laproscopic) you had a major, traumatic surgery. Your body is scrambling to heal itself on reduced calories. Get your water first, then concentrate on protein to help the mending process. Walk when you can, rest as much as you want / need.

Get your iron checked again.

And I LOVE B12

Actually, it was open with gallbladder removal -- guess I just need to have more patience. I swear by B-12!

Then there is even more trauma to recover from!   Yes, patience is good ;)

I think it could take a few more weeks to regain energy.  For one thing, your diet is probably limited and you will need to get on regular food to start noticing a difference.

Like the previous poster said, you have had serious surgery so take your time.

Thanks for the response -- that seems to be the general concenses. I did increase my calories today (495 with 80 grams of protein) so I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings!

You could be low on iron.  Have you had your iron tested since surgery?

How low was your B12?

Are you taking iron daily?

Had it tested 2 weeks post-op and letter from the doctor just said slightly anemic and low K+ -- I take fusion vitamin and minerals 4 times daily (each chewable has 7.5mg iron -- ferous fumarate) and feel fine and tolerating food (mostly protein shakes and lately, about 1/2 serving of soft protein (cottage cheese, talapia, cheese). Only other symptom is my knees ache all the time and sometimes the bones in my lowere legs hurt -- I've thought about calcium but the vitamin has that also.

You aren't getting enough of any vitamins on four Bariatric Fusion a day.  The ASMBS says we need 200% of the RDA of most things and four of those only gives you 100% of most things.  You'd need EIGHT a day to get enough of most things.

For instance, right now you're getting only 30 mg iron and the ASMBS says menstruating women need 54-63 mg iron and everyone else needs 36 mg - but that's for people that aren't anemic at all.  If you are anemic at all, you should be taking extra iron, not less iron.

Four of those Fusion don't have enough calcium, either.  The ASMBS says we need 1500-2000 mg calcium CITRATE daily and four Fusion gives you only 1200 mg calcium - and some of that is calcium carbonate, which we don't absorb after RNY because we don't have enough stomach acid.

If you want to get your energy level up, I suggest starting with the vitamins recommended by the ASMBS and adding extra things, like iron, as indicated by your labs.
