Drinking while eating or right after

How much of the calories/protein/nutrients are absorbed if you eat during or directly after eating? My sister had RNY two years ago and she is doing very well but told me the other day when I saw her eating and drinking water that she has not been able to separate the two since surgery. She said she told our surgeon and he "got onto her."  Her labs have been okay, but just wondering if the liquid would flush out the food before you are able to absorb anything?

I'm sry I cant answer your specific question but i've seen around the board that drinking while eating is the cause of a lot of the regain ppl have in maintenance.  Since the food isnt sitting in the stomach long you get hunger sooner and will end up eating more which = regain.

But back to your original question...I always was under the impression the nutrients were absorbed in the intestine not the stomach per say..

It is not so much an issue of calories/protein but keeping that full feeling longer. It keeps you from over eating.

Calories are absorbed in the intestine. They dont want you to drink while eating because it empties out the pouch & therefore allows you to consume more food which is more calories. Alot of people I've heard gain back weight due to drinking while eating because of that.

One of my friends does the same thing.  She lost her weight within the first year and has maintained the loss three years.  She does everything she's suppose to with the exception of food and drink.   I made the change just over 4 yrs ago and gave up diet soda too.   We go out to eat and I order water when we first sit down and take a few sips then set it aside.  She orders a diet soda and drinks it and then has another with the meal.  It amazes me that she can do it.  She says she only drinks soda when she eats out and drinks water or tea with her other meals.  She stopped protein drinks when she reached goal.  Her labs have been fine thus far.  There is that saying that there is an exception to every rule so perhaps in my friend's case and your sister's they are the exceptions.

If your friend is one of the people like me who don't feel physical hunger, washing he food out of her pouch and feeling hungry sooner isn't an issue, BUT it still enables her to overeat when she washes the food out of her pouch during the meal.  Since i dont get physical hunger, very  occasionally, if I am eating something salty, I will take some small sips of water with my meal, but I am always VERY careful to not eat too much.

As someone else indicated, though, it doesn't affect absorption of nutrients since that is done in the intestine rather than the pouch, so drinking with meals would not affect her labs in any way.

Why not just do what we were all told? Is it that hard?

Sometime the things we are told are stupid and make no sense.  You can drink protein drinks which are liquid and slide right through, but bone dry chicken you are supposed to choke down without a drop of liquid?  Does that make sense to you?  It doesn't to me and my doctor said sipping as you need too is fine.  I am 7+ years out and to this day cannot eat a complete hamburger, I got one yesterday, 1 patty of meat, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, major, grilled onions and pickles from 5 Guys.  It was great, I pick off the bread as I eat and as it is I could eat half.  Hmmm seems my anatomy is in tact and working quite well as it should.  I don't do what I am told I do what makes sense for me just as everyone should do.  I am willing to sacrifice and cut calories to maintain my weight because weight 140lbs is more important to me then eating ice cream.  We all do what we have to do, success is individual.

Pre op your pyloric valve kept fluids from washing food out of your stomach, so drinking with meals pre op did not have the same affect as post op.
