My husband & I went & bought ourselves new bikes this morning. As far as exercise goes, how good is biking? I love it & could ride for hours. Just curious if this is good exercise?

yes it is, ofcourse the more you stand during the better and the faster you go.  But it is a great form and a easy on joints.

"  the more you stand during the better and the faster you go"

So untrue...

By standing you are engaging a different muscle group along with adding your body weight to the power.  This will let you push a bigger gear FOR
A TIME than you may be able to while sitting down.  Speed on a bike is all about power versus resistance, frictional resistance wheels & the ground, wind resistance  includes clothing body position and equipment.

Speed comes from minimizing these resistant forces.  Friction is overcome by tires Roadie and TT
bikes have narrow high pressure tires (mine are 120psi) allowing them to reduce resistance substantially when compared to Hybrid or MTN bikes. Gravitational forces are reduced by reducing weight in both the bike and the rider.  Bikes built from Carbon Fiber will be faster than aluminum bikes of the exact same make and same power input.

Wind resistance is over come by frame design, rider position and clothing.  There is a reason that people on Roadie bikes sport skin tight clothes, and it isn't to look cool.  The tighter your clothes the less they flap around causing drag, even good helmets are designed to reduce wind resistance.  The biggest source of wind resistance is the rider themself and their body position.  This is why in Triathlons and Time Trials you will see riders spending a lot of time in in an aero position  this position can give you more than a >10% reduction in resistance resulting in less effort required to go faster.

On one stretch I ride frequently if I stand I can get 16-17 mph in areo pushing a big gear I am good for 21mph.  Standing is typically reserved to give you a quick burst as in a sprint or additional power as in climbing.

Watch the TDF
Saturday for the time trials and you will see all of this put into practice by the top cyclists in the world, as it is a time trial stage, which all about covering a set distance as fast as the rider can against the clock.

Depends on what you mean by good?  Are you out for health gains or pure caloric burn?

As with any exercise it is good but how good depends largely on the effort you put into it.  Speed, distance, elevation gains all play a role.  The faster you and the longer you do it the more calories you will burn and if you do it right just as with running you will see quick improvements in your endurance.  In my opinion cycling is one of the more enjoyable and disciplines where you can make the most gains the fastest.

Now your ability to accell at the sport and what you can do with in it will sort of be determined by what type of bike you bought.  When people approach the Exercise and Fitness forum about cycling one of the first things looked at is Current goals and possible future goals as you can sink a ton of money into this sport.

What kinda bike you get?

I bought an 18 speed Mountain bike. I plan on trying to go for both goals health gain
& caloric burn. Of course it won't be as good to start with but I plan on making this
something that I will want to do for life.

I got a new bike yesterday. It is a road bike with 21 speeds. I used to do a lot of biking but that was 16 years ago. My wife and I went on many trails all over the West and even into Canada. Loved it but wife got hurt and we kind of drifted away and sold our bikes. I plan on trying again and hope I don't kill myself. I am a lot older now, and hope I remember how. The new shifing seems strange to me, but I am sure I will catch on to it. Just put it together last night so keep the women and children off the sidewalks....

I hear ya. Lol Yeah the switching gears thing is new for me too. Its about the only
form of exercise my husband seem interested in doing with me so we are gonna
give it a go. So far I'm liking it. Spent about an hour on the bike this morning, only
stopped because it was about to rain. Hopefully its something we as a family will
start to do together. Need to get my kids off their butts & moving. Good Luck Larry!
I hope I don't break anything either.

I ride a Tri bike so I get to keep the same old shifters we all grew up on.  I have ridden Roadie bikes with the integrated brake shifters and totally love them as shifting is more seemless while riding.
