Iron supplements

I have been doing a search on this site regarding iron supplements and found that ferrous sulfate is not a good choice.  I see where you should either use carbonyl iron or heme iron and one of the recommendations was Sundown Perfect Iron, which has calcium in it.  I thought that calcium inhibited the absorption of iron, so why would this be a good choice.  Also, is there anywhere you can buy either carbonyl iron or heme iron over the counter.  I just ran out of my iron this morning and need to replace it but it doesn't make since to replace it with the same iron, as it is ferrous sulfate, if we don't absorb it.  Thanks for your help.

Yes, carbonyl iron is the recommended form.  I've been using the Iron+C tablets for 4 years with good results and no GI upset.

Sundown Perfect Iron does not have calcium in it; I just went to their website and looked at the label.

Feosol is another brand that makes a carbonyl iron- they also make a ferrous supplement, so you'll need to read the label to make sure you get the right one.

Carbonyl iron needs some extra acid, usually in the form of added Vit C, to aid in absorption, especially in gastric bypass patients, as we don't produce much stomach acid.

I use the Iron+C from Celebrate Vitamins too.  No stomach upset and good labs.

I just looked at my bottle of Sundown Perfect Iron and I don't see any calcium.  But I think I do remember seeing it before.  What exactly does it say?  I think it's a very small amount of some form of calcium that is used as a binding agent in many vitamins supplements.  It's such a small amount that it won't interfere with the iron absorption.

I get it at Meijer but I think some other stores carry it.

I take Ferrex 150 (iron polysacceride)  Generic of Niferex whcich is given to liver failure pts.

It's 100 caps for $10 on Amazon.  Since I've taken them I haven't had to have any more iron infusions and I really feel better.
