So lately I have been working out a lot.  I just got a wii fit at a yard sale for 25 bucks and I really enjoy it.  Also i play wii tennis almost every night for about 40 minutes. So my question is do my NET calories need to be around 600-900 so that my body doesn't feel like its starving or is it ok for my NET calories to be around 100 or 200.

An example would be today.  I ate 852 calories but burned 649 from 25 minutes on the elliptical, then going the wii fit and then wii tennis.

I e-mailed my nutritionist last week to see what she said but she hasn't gotten back with me and figured I would get some of you alls opinions.

Did you mean net CALORIES? Because 900 carbs would be insane...

the trouble is that you cannot totally trust the calorie burned stated on the exercises, i find that they tend to run high.

Are you strill trying to lose weight?  If so, you really need your net calories to be a negative number - you need to burn more calories than you take in.

However, it's pretty much impossible to figure out exactly how many calories you burn in a day.  You can find websites that estimate how many calories a person of your weight would burn doing a certain activity but those are just estimates.

I use calories burned as money in the bank. If you don't eat more to make up for them, then logic will tell you that you burned more than you needed today and should lose because of it. At least that is how it used to be when I was told that by my PCP

Yes i am still loosing and was told to eat between 600-900 calories.  I was just worried that if my NET was lower than 600 it would put my body in starvation mode.  Most calculators online tell me not to eat below 1200.

To calculate your net calories, you take the calories you eat minus the calories you burn.  For instance, if you eat 900 calories and burn 1200 calories, you do: 900 - 1200 = -300.

If your net calories are not lower than zero, you will not lose weight.  You only lose weight when you take in fewer calories than you burn.  If you take in more calories than you burn, you gain weight.  If you take in the same number of calories that you burn, your weight stays the same.

You probably burn 1200 calories even if all you do is sit on the couch all day.  So if you add in some exercise, you could eat 1200 calories and your net calories would still be negative something.

can't really rely on the calculators for us - we follow different rules. that being said, i was supposed to eat more then that at 4 months out, but you should follow what your surgeon said.

i don't eat calories burned though, as i don't believe most estimates

If you are still losing weight, then by definition your net calories are below zero.

Your basal metabolism is probably pretty high, so the extra  calories burned through exercise may not be a big impact over the short term.  As long as you get your protein in you shouldn't have anything to worry about regarding starvation mode.

I don't trust the calorie meters on exercise equipment, but I do find that they are useful to compare the intensity of my workouts.
