started physical therapy today
It was not as bad as I thought it would be and the therapist says I only need to see her once a week as long as I do my exercises at home. And I only have two exercises I have to do at home, although I am supposed to do them several times a day. But they will only take about five minutes each time.
I was ready to smack her at one point, though. She had me doing this thing where I bend backwards and it hurts and I feel like I might fall over backwards. She had me do it ten times, then asked me to do ten more, then when I thought I was done asked me to do ten more. For some reason it reminded me of when I was my sister's labor coach and I kept telling her to just push one more time and her baby would probably be out, and then she pushed and the baby didn't come out, and I just kept saying one more time. I think she wanted to smack me then, too.
The PT pointed out something interesting. I was telling her how the doctor had said my MRI didn't look that bad and she pointed out that when they do an MRI, they have you lie on your back. But my back doesn't actually hurt when I lie on my back. She said it seems like certain movements put pressure on my disc and that causes pain, but lying on my back isn't one of them. The disc looks pretty normal in that position. It's when I move that the disc does something it's not supposed to do.
That made lots of sense to me so after I got home I emailed my mother and told her. She emailed me back and explained that they cannot do an MRI of someone bending over. Well, I knew that and I wasn't suggesting they should have done an MRI any other way than what they did. I was just saying that perhaps that was why the MRI didn't show much of a problem. She then told me that if there is a problem, it should show up on an MRI lying down. Well, it didn't, did it? And she went on to tell me this is why doctors get annoyed with physical therapists.
Um, yeah. The physical therapist didn't go to medical school so she probably has no idea what she's talking about. The doctor at my mother's office, now, he knows everything. Except he didn't know why my back hurt or what to do about it. Blah. I decided I was done talking to her for the day.

ohhh Mother's and daughter's...it never ends
I know I say some stupid **** to my daughter's !!!...what can I say , It happened with my mom and I till she went into a coma and passed
I sure hope the PT helps !!
When I went to PT I was MORTIFIED when my evaluation was done in public and one of the tests she had me do , which was stand on one foot and raise on my toes , I told her I was uncomfortable about that on on my right side , that something didn't feel right , she said do it anyway ( I'm stupid) so I did it and snap.....it did not heal for 9 months , but of course SHE had nothing to do with my pain in my foot , because according to her it never happened.
Good idea about being done for today with talking to mom . It really is a shame they cant at least do an MRI or CAT scan STAND to see the pressure that gravity puts on the spine.
By the way day 5 of pain patch (Butrans) is a thumbs up.
Hope things are going well for you

I really hope the PT helps. I have been to PT for some elbow issues and it made a world of difference.
I know PT's are not MD's, but in many states they are PhD's.... they can diagnosis and treat. My experience with PT and OT is many are highly trained and really know their stuff, like most professionals with a specialty... they see injuries all day, every day. Of course there are people, in all professions, that suck at what they do.But , to maintain a profitable business it pays to know what you are doing...
Guess I'm just trying to say I put a lot of faith and credibility in PT's and agree with what your pt said about your particular MRI results.
