I am getting my 1st iron infusion in the morning and the Dr said I need someone to pick me up that I can't drive myself.  I didn't think to ask him but will I be ok enough to go to work after it is done?  Anyone have these and then go right back to work??

Thanks, I am excited to finally get this.  Praying it will help with my exhaustion, weakness, and other issues.  Those are the 2 that I can't take any more.

I have not had one however my coworker has and she is unable to work the same day. She said it makes her very very tired afterwards.

guess it depends on what kind you are having. Some of the iron infusions can cause a reaction and you might have to take benadryl.

I did 6 infusions and never had any problems.

I get the one-off infusions and could go back to work afterwards - and drive myself - but then I don't get super doses of benadryl, which will no doubt make you too sleepy to drive or work!!!!

Good luck!

This might sound like silly question, but what is iron infusion for-is it when iron shows low in your blood work?   Just had not heard this before.

I had my first one 2 months ago.  I felt fine during and after and went back to work right away.  It took a few weeks before I really saw anything.

Thanks, the Dr said I may notice right away or it could be a few weeks so interesting to hear you say it took a few weeks to feel a difference.  How often do you need to have them?  He said he would test me again in 5 weeks and I might be able to go a year before a 2nd one but I have heard some have to have weekly or monthly or just periodically.  I guess we are all different with this.

Wanted to add I had my first infusion June 2010 and the next round started mid-August this year so a little over a year. The first type was a Venefor IV push infusion which I actually felt the results quicker than the Infed I'm currently taking. The Venefor is much more expensive than the Infed. We will see how the results end up with the Infed both timewise and how I feel.

Dr said that they give benedryl before so that is probably why he won't let me drive home.  Thanks for the responses and i guess I will just play it by ear.

To the one asking about iron infusions..yes it is when your iron is out of whack.  I am 2 yrs post op and have not been able to get mine up even with taking iron pills for 2 yrs.

The oncologist actually told me that he felt that any gastric bypass person that took oral iron was useless because we don't obsorb enough of it to matter.  This really shocked me.  I will definitely ask him more about this theory on this during my next visit with him in 5 weeks.  I am curious as to what it is he thinks we should take.

Well, I take 75 mg carbonyl iron daily, along with 500 mg vitamin C.  I absorb enough of it to matter - my iron level is something like 80 and my ferritin is around 75, last time I had labs done.  I'm four years post op.
